LA Galaxy have confirmed Robbie Keane will leave the club when his contract expires in December.
Keane, 36, joined the Galaxy from Tottenham Hotspurs in 2011 and quickly established himself as one of MLS’ best players helping Bruce Arena’s side to three MLS Cups.
The former Ireland international’s existing deal is due to expire at the end of the year and the Galaxy have confirmed he will not return for their 2017 campaign, following in the footsteps of Steven Gerrard in leaving the club.
“It is hard to put into words what Robbie Keane has meant to the LA Galaxy,” Bruce Arena told the Galaxy’s official website. “From day one, Keane has given everything to this team both on and off the field and has led our club to some its greatest accomplishments.
“His resume and accomplishments speak for themselves; he has been the most successful international signing in this league’s history. We thank Robbie for everything he has given to this club and this city and we wish him the best in whatever comes next in his career.”
Injuries limited Keane to just 16 starts in MLS this season, which is the fewest he made in his last four seasons with the Galaxy. In the last four MLS campaigns only Bradley Wright-Philips (76) has scored more goals than Keane (67).
