West Ham to battle Liverpool for Mexican striker

Liga NOS champions Benfica are bracing themselves for a significant bid for striker Raul Jimenez from Premier League duo West Ham and Liverpool according to Portuguese publication A Bola.

The Mexican forward was a key performer at this summer’s Confederation Cup, which was eventually won by Germany after they overcame Chile 1-0 on Sunday evening.

Jimenez is Benfica’s record signing after joining for just short of £19m from Atletico Madrid in 2015, with the 26-year-old also the most expensive Mexican footballer in history.

West Ham remain keen on Jimenez, though it’s rumoured he is not sold on a move to the Hammers, which could present Liverpool with the chance to lure the Mexico international to Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp is keen to secure another centre forward this summer as the Liverpool manager gears up for life without Daniel Sturridge, who the German is open to selling.

Jimenez made only 19 league appearances for Benfica last season, six of which were starts, but went on to score seven league goals for the champions, with a return of a goal every 110.4 minutes the third best of players to make 10 or more Liga NOS appearances last term.
