United consider late swoop for Arsenal defender

Manchester United are weighing up a surprise late move for Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy to help solve their injury crisis, according to L’Equipe.

Louis van Gaal is currently without five full-backs through injury and has been forced to dip into the reserves for defenders in recent weeks.

Arsenal are reluctant to let Debuchy leave this month but the player is pushing for a move in order to force his way into Didier Deschamp’s France squad for the Euro’s in the summer.

The 30-year-old had been expected to join Aston Villa on loan until the end of the season, but that deal now appears off after talks between the clubs hit a sticking point regarding the loan fee.

The former Newcastle full-back was omitted from the squad that faced Burnley in the FA Cup on Saturday and hasn’t featured for Arsenal since the end of November in the Champions League, where he got eight minutes at the end.
