Wenger doesn’t rule out bid for Madrid star

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists the club have not made a bid for Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema, but did not rule out making a move for the France international before the transfer window closes.

Benzema has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs this summer with his position in Rafa Benitez's starting XI uncertain and reports had emerged suggesting Wenger's side had already lodged an offer in the region of £40m for his services.

"I don’t know where that story about Benzema comes from," said Wenger on Arsenal’s pre-season of Asia.

"It is not happening at the moment. We do not rule out making any more signing but I am happy with the squad we have. If I find an exceptional player to strengthen the squad, then I will do it.

"That depends on the market and it has not been easy because there are a lot of teams competing for the same player."

The 27-year-old has developed into one of European’s most prolific forwards since making the switch from Lyon to Real Madrid in 2009. In fact, in that period, only Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo (62) and Lionel Messi (60) have scored more goals in the Champions League than Benzema (30).

Added to that, only the same duo can claim to have scored more goals in La Liga since Benzema’s arrival (87).
