Chelsea veteran close to leaving club

Fulham are the frontrunners to sign Chelsea defender Gary Cahill this month, claims the London Evening Standard.

Cahill has entered the final six months of his existing Chelsea deal and will not be handed a new one after dropping out of favour under Maurizio Sarri this season.

Chelsea are open to offers for Cahill this month and Fulham are widely expected to sign the 33-year-old on loan until the end of the current campaign.

The former England international does not want to make a decision on his long-term future until the summer but a loan move to Fulham will effectively end his Chelsea career.

Cahill joined Chelsea from Bolton in 2012 and has been a tremendous servant for the club in that time, winning every trophy available.

Sarri has reinstated David Luiz as his first choice centre-back alongside Antonio Rudiger, forcing both Cahill and Andreas Christensen to the fringes.

January is primed to be a very busy month for Chelsea, having already confirmed a deal for Borussia Dortmund ace Christian Pulisic.

Cesc Fabregas and Tammy Abraham are also expected to join Cahill in leaving the club this month.

Cahill has only managed 21 minutes of playing time in the Premier League this season but did start four of Chelsea’s six Europa League group games.
