Manchester United submit final offer for Premier League defender
Manchester United have tabled a take it or leave it offer to Tottenham for top defensive target Toby Alderweireld, claims The Daily Mirror.
The Premier League giants are desperate to make at least one more signing before Thursday’s deadline and are doing everything to land Alderweireld.
Jose Mourinho wants to sign a new centre-back for the third summer in a row and Alderweireld has emerged as the overwhelming favourite from a four-man shortlist.
Alderweireld has entered the final 12 months of his existing Tottenham deal and wants to leave the club after falling down the pecking order last season.
United tried to sign the 29-year-old in May but walked away from negotiations after Daniel Levy slapped a £75m valuation on the Belgium international’s head.
Alderweireld will be available for £25m next summer and United have no interest in matching Tottenham’s asking price.
With time running out, United do not want to waste anymore time and have been told by Mourinho to work on other targets if they fail with their final offer.
Levy has received United’s £40m bid but it remains to be seen whether the Tottenham chairman will accept.
Alderweireld is regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League and offered a timely reminder of his class at the 2018 World Cup.
He averaged more accurate long balls per game (7.9) than any other Premier League outfielder last season.
