Chris Coleman leaves Wales post to save sinking Sunderland

Chris Coleman, who led Wales to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 last year, has left his post in order to take up the vacant managerial position at Sunderland, the Guardian reveal.

While no official statement has yet been made by the club the 47-year-old is expected to be appointed at some point over the weekend following the termination of Simon Grayson’s contract.

The appointment will bring to an end the Welshman’s five-year spell in charge of his country having failed to book at place at next summer’s World Cup in Russia.

It will also be a return to club manager in England for the first time since 2010, with Coventry, following previous stints at former club Fulham and in Spain with Real Sociedad.

He’ll take the reins at the Stadium of Light after the match against Millwall, with Sunderland currently rock bottom of the Championship ahead of the game and without a win in 14 league outings.

In all likelihood Coleman’s first game in charge will be a tricky trip to face Aston Villa on Tuesday night, needing an immediate response from his new charges.
