Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has told Javier Hernandez he can leave the club before the transfer window shuts on Tuesday, reports The Daily Telegraph.
Hernandez, 27, has failed to impress the Dutchman since he was made manager last summer and last the majority of last season on loan at Real Madrid.
The Mexico international has been heavily linked with a move to a number of Premier League clubs, but is reportedly leaning towards a move to Bayer Leverkusen, where Champions League football is on offer.
The Bundesliga outfit will be looking to strengthen their offensive options after selling Heung-Min Son to Spurs for £18m earlier in the week.
Hernandez’s impending exit would leave the burden of scoring United’s goals firmly on Wayne Rooney and 19-year-old James Wilson’s shoulders, unless the Dutchman can spring a surprise in the remaining hours of the transfer window.
The Mexican striker, who has entered the final year of his contract, joined United in 2010 and has scored 37 goals in 103 appearances, earning himself the moniker of a super-sub.
In fact, up until Van Gaal's arrival, no player in the Premier League had scored more goals coming off the bench than Hernandez (14) in that period.
