Marseille have confirmed Abou Diaby will be sidelined for the next four months following an ankle operation last Thursday.
Diaby, 30, has struggled with injuries for the majority of his career but had looked to overcome his serious concerns this season.
The former Arsenal midfielder has made two league appearances this season but hasn’t featured in any of Marseille’s last eight matches.
Rudi Garcia’s side have now confirmed the Diaby underwent an ankle operation last week and will miss the next four months as he continues his rehabilitation.
“For several weeks the midfielder Abou Diaby suffered a problem in his right ankle,” a statement read on Marseille’s official website.
“Given the persistence of pain and unable to train normally, the medical staff decided the need for surgery. Abou Diaby underwent surgery last Thursday.
“His absence is estimated at four months. Marseille wish a speedy recovery to Abu and hope to see him as soon as possible.”
In the last six league campaigns Diaby has only managed to start 14 matches from a possible 228.
