Arsenal face competition for former midfielder to replace Wenger

According to The Mirror both of Mikel Arteta’s former Premier League clubs are lining him up as a managerial replacement.

Arsenal and Everton look likely to be in the market for a new boss in the summer, with Arsene Wenger and Sam Allardyce under real pressure.

The latest news is that both clubs are monitoring their former midfielder Mikel Arteta, who has made a significant impression at Manchester City since joining Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff.

It has been revealed that the Gunners have to option to cut Wenger’s two-year contract short in the summer should they wish and it is looking inevitable that the Frenchman’s time in North London is winding down.

That could pave the way for a return for Arteta, who spent five seasons at the Emirates, captaining the club for much of that time before injury forced the Spaniard to retire.

Guardiola has tipped the 35-year-old to succeed in management in the future and would unlikely stand in his way should such an opportunity arise.
