Chelsea have trying to sign Dries Mertens from Napoli before Friday's transfer deadline, claims Gianluca Di Marzio.
Mertens currently has a thigh injury but Chelsea are desperately trying to get a new striker in for the remainder of the season.
With Olivier Giroud desperately pushing to leave Chelsea, Frank Lampard does not want to be left short in attack.
Tammy Abraham is currently nursing his own injury and Michy Batshuayi does not feature in Lampard's long-term plans for the club.
It remains to be seen whether Napoli will entertain Mertens' departure so late in the window but the 32-year-old does only have six months left to run on his current deal.
Napoli are reportedly working on an extension for the Belgium international but are still at risk of leaving him for nothing in the summer.
Mertens has been limited to just 10 league starts for Napoli this season and has returned only four goals in 16 appearances in total.
In fact, the veteran has scored more goals in the Champions League (5 in six games) than he has in Serie A this season.
