Liverpool confirm extent of Gomez injury

 

Liverpool have announced Joe Gomez will be sidelined for around six weeks after suffering a fracture to his lower leg in Wednesday’s 3-1 win away to Burnley.

 

Gomez was stretchered off midway through the first half and replaced by Trent Alexander-Arnold after colliding with the advertising hoardings.

 

The England international has been one of the biggest success stories of the Premier League this season and news he will miss the entire festive period is a huge blow to Liverpool.

 

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed after beating Burnley the club were bracing themselves for bad new and Gomez could now miss Liverpool’s next 10 matches in all competitions.

 

The Reds face Napoli in their crucial final Champions League group game next week before facing Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City during the festive period.

 

“Liverpool can confirm Joe Gomez sustained a fracture to the lower left leg during the 3-1 win at Burnley on Wednesday night,” a statement confirmed on the club’s official website.

 

“Gomez’s injury was further assessed by the Reds’ medical team at Melwood on Thursday. Initial indications suggest the 21-year-old is facing a spell of up to six weeks out of action, though this side dependent on how his treatment and rehabilitation programmes progress.”

Since August 2015, Liverpool have a better win ratio with Gomez in the starting XI in the Premier League (63.6%) compared to matches he has not started (58.6%).
