Stoke shotstopper could miss the season

Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland could miss the remainder of the season with a problematic ankle injury according to Potters boss Mark Hughes.

Butland sustained an ankle injury while on international duty for England last March and he hasn’t featured competitively for club nor country since being stretched off in the 3-2 win over Germany.

The 23-year-old was expected to return for Stoke’s first game of the season, but aggravated the injury before the match at Middlesbrough and has since suffered a number of setbacks.

Speaking after the 4-2 loss at Chelsea, and in the context of tying up a deal for Lee Grant, Hughes hinted that Butland could be sidelined for the rest of the campaign.

“That’s a priority for us because we’re in a little bit of a situation with Jack Butland being unavailable for any number of months and he might not come back this season,” the Stoke boss is quoted as saying in the Guardian.

“He may well get back April/May time, we’re not sure. But we’re more comfortable with his situation now and understand what the problems have been. So he’ll be fine when he gets back.”
