Everton wrap up blockbuster deal for James Rodriguez

Everton have confirmed the blockbuster arrival of Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez on a two-year deal with an option to a further 12 months.

The Toffees have agreed a reported £22.5m deal with Madrid to reunite Rodriguez with head coach Carlo Ancelotti for the third time in his career.

Considered the best players in the world at the time of his record-breaking move to Madrid in 2014, Rodriguez is comfortably the biggest transfer in Everton's history.

The 29-year-old has been deemed surplus to requirements at Madrid for a number of seasons, however, and has made the surprise move to Everton to kickstart his career again.

Rodriguez started just 18 league matches for Madrid across the last four years, with an underwhelming two-year loan stint at Bayern Munich sandwiched in the middle of that time.

The Colombia international is the second new arrival at Everton this week after Ancelotti too secured a reunion with Napoli midfielder Allan in a £25m deal.

Of players to have started at least 30 matches in Europe's top five leagues since August 2017, only two players require fewer minutes per key pass than Rodriguez (one every 24.7 minutes of action).
