Everton confirm Benitez departure

Everton have elected to call time on Rafa Benitez's time at the Goodison Park helm.

Benitez was appointed Toffees boss in the summer as a successor for Carlo Ancelotti, but given his Liverpool links, the Spaniard never really won over the fanbase.

Everton started the season brightly, but things started to unravel from the start of October, with the Merseyside outfit claiming just six points from their last 13 matches.

A 2-1 loss at relegation-threatened Norwich on Saturday proved to be the straw that broke the camel's back for the Toffees.

"Everton Football Club can confirm the departure of Rafael Benitez as First Team manager," a statement read on the club's official website.

"Benitez, who joined Everton in June 2021, has left the Club with immediate effect.

"An update on a permanent replacement will be made in due course."

Attention turns to Benitez's replacement with former striker Wayne Rooney, who has been working wonders with Derby, among the favourites for the role at Goodison Park.
