Swansea have announced Federico Fernandez has put pen to paper on a new three-year deal keeping him at the club until 2020.
Fernandez’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of next season and Swansea have moved to secure the services of one of their key players.
The 28-year-old has been one of Swansea’s best players under new head coach Paul Clement and his form over the remainder of the season will be integral to whether the club can beat the drop.
“It’s a very nice period for me,” Fernandez told the club’s official website. “It has been good for the team because the results and the performances have been better.
“And to sign a new deal is something special and something positive for me. I am very happy to have signed the contract. When I first arrived here, I found a really nice club and a nice city.
“My family are very happy here. My little girl was born in Singleton Hospital and part of my life is here because I have been here for almost three years.
“I am happy with the football and in my private life. The new contract helps me because it shows I have confidence of the club. Now I am looking forward to the future.”
The arrival of Clement has seen Swansea pick up four victories in their last six Premier League games and Fernandez, along with fellow central defender Alfie Mawson, has made Swansea harder to break down.
In fact, since the start of 2017 only three Swansea players have a higher WhoScored rating than Fernandez (7.04).
