Tottenham eye audacious swoop for Chelsea outcast

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho wants to raid former club Chelsea for out of favour striker Olivier Giroud, claims Gianluca Di Marzio.

The North London outfit are poised to confirm the arrival of PSV forward Steven Bergwijn but Mourinho still wants a new striker before Friday's deadline.

With Harry Kane sidelined for the best part of three months, Mourinho has conceded Tottenham will face an up hill battle to secure fourth place unless they sign a replacement.

Tottenham remain in talks with AC Milan for Krzysztof Piatek but it has since emerged they have a budget of just £10m for a new striker this month.

Mourinho's side have abandoned their pursuit of Real Sociedad striker Willian Jose as a result and are now hopeful of prising Giroud away from Chelsea.

The France international is desperate to leave Chelsea this month in order to maintain any hope of playing at Euro 2020.

Frank Lampard has not completely ruled out Giroud's departure before Friday's deadline, though it remains to be seen whether he would be willing to strengthen a direct rival for fourth spot.

Should Giroud be allowed to leave this month then Chelsea would prefer to deal with Inter, with former boss Antonio Conte also keen on the 33-year-old.

Giroud has been limited to just five Premier League appearances all season after falling completely down the pecking order under Lampard.
