Payet has £15m relegation clause

Dimitri Payet will be free to leave West Ham for as little as £15m should they drop down to the Championship this season, reports The Times.

The France international has been heavily linked with a move away from West Ham in the January transfer window following the club’s abysmal start to the season.

Manchester United are the latest side to be linked with a move for Payet but could hold off their interest until the summer after it was revealed the 29-year-old has a relegation clause that will allow him to leave for £15m in the summer.

Payet is not short of suitors at the moment but clubs will have to battle for his signature should Slaven Bilic’s sides fail to avoid relegation this season, with £15m an absolute steal in the current market.

West Ham battled to an important point in their 2-2 draw away to Liverpool at the weekend, but they are still one point above the bottom three and in serious threat of going down unless they strengthen their defence in January.

Despite their poor form, Payet has still been a cut above the rest at times this season. In fact, Payet has created more chances than any other player in the Premier League this season (48), while the former Marseille creator has also scored more direct free-kicks than any other player in England’s top tier since the start of last season (3).
