Breakthrough for Man City as Grealish deal edges closer

Manchester City are on the verge of shattering the British transfer record to land Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish in a £100m deal, claims The Athletic.

Grealish, who has been training with Villa since the weekend, has agreed terms on a five-year deal with the Premier League champions.

City have been in advanced talks with City for over a week over a record-breaking deal for Grealish and are now in the home stretch.

Villa were willing to make Grealish the best-paid player in the club's history to snub City but the 25-year-old has decided to take the next step in his career.

City are not just agreeing to break their own club-transfer record, which is currently set at £65m for the price paid for Ruben Dias last summer, but also the British transfer record.

United have the current record after re-signing Paul Pogba from Juventus for £89m in 2016 but City will now blow that out the water.

Grealish emerged as one of the best players in the Premier League last season but was limited to just one start at Euro 2020.

Only Kevin De Bruyne (3.2) averaged more key passes per game than Grealish (3.1) in the Premier League in 2020/21.
