Everton beat Manchester United to Yerry Mina

Everton have announced the arrival of Yerry Mina from Barcelona for a fee reportedly in the region of £30m.

Mina has secured a move away from Barcelona less than eight months after joining the Spanish champions from Brazilian side Palmeiras in a £11m deal.

Barcelona were hawking Mina around Europe in a bid to sell the Colombia international and Everton have fended off interest from Lyon and Manchester United for his signature.

Jose Mourinho’s side were the favourites to land the 23-year-old, but United were not interested in being held to ransom by the demands of Mina’s agent and cooled their interest.

The Colombian has instead put pen to paper on a five-year deal with Everton and becomes the third Barcelona player to move to Goodison Park this summer following the transfers of Lucas Digne and Andre Gomes.

“It is important that the club want to fight for something,” Mina told he club’s official website. “That is why I am here.

“I have watched the Premier League for a long time. it is the best league in the world. This is a great opportunity for me and I am looking forward to competing here.

“I know about Everton’s players and I look forward to being able to play with my new team. I have spoken a lot to the coach and I know his passion for Everton and determination to be successful. I am also determined to do my best for Everton.”

Mina was a revelation at the 2018 World Cup, scoring three goals in as many appearances to live up to his reputation as a goalscoring centre-back. In fact, Eden Hazard (8.51) garnered a higher WhoScored rating than Mina (8.35) in Russia this summer.
