Paris Saint-Germain striker first to European milestone

Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani became the first player to score 25 goals in Europe’s top five leagues this season after continuing his remarkable season in the club’s 3-0 win over Bordeaux on Friday night.

Cavani, 28, has divided opinion among fans but has really found his range this season for Unai Emery’s side, thriving in the central role he has been craving for many years.

The 28-year-old had been forced to spend the majority of his first three years at the club out wide in order to accommodate Zlatan Ibrahimovic down the middle but has spent this season as the main striker following the Swede’s summer move to Manchester United.

Cavani has now scored in 17 of his 22 league starts this season and Emery will hope the Uruguay international can carry this breathtaking form into their encounter with Barcelona in the first leg of their last 16 Champions League tie next week.

PSG’s No.9 has scored at least six more goals than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues this season and also has six goals in six appearances in the Champions League. Emery’s side need to get a first-leg advantage on home soil to have any chance of progressing past Barcelona when they travel to the Camp Nou for the reverse fixture.

The Ligue 1 giants have been serial underachievers in Europe and Cavani will need to be at peak form for Emery’s side to have any chance over the two legs.
