Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is hopeful of making Southampton captain Jose Fonte his fifth signing at Old Trafford before the transfer window shuts, according to The Guardian.
Mourinho is keen to add an experienced defender to his squad before the window closes in under a fortnights time and has identified Fonte as the ideal target given his probable price tag.
Fonte has previously admitted to being pleased by United’s interest but Southampton aren’t expected to step aside to let another key player leave this summer.
Only Laurent Koscielny (219) has completed more interceptions in the last three Premier League seasons than Fonte (201).
