Chelsea and Liverpool starlets earn perfect 10s in Carabao Cup Team of the Round

 

The third round of the Carabao Cup proved an absolute goal feast for Premier League sides. West Brom were the only top-flight side eliminated by lower league oppoisition, with the likes of Newcastle, Liverpool, Chelsea and Everton all racking up enormous wins to book their place in the next stage.

Goalkeeper: Willy Caballero (Chelsea) - 8.80 rating

 

After such a flat display against Liverpool at the weekend, a 6-0 thumping of Barnsley was just what Frank Lampard's side required. Even still, back-up goalkeeper Willy Caballero remarkably still had to make nine saves for the home side. It wasn't as straight forward at times and the 38-year-old really earned his clean sheet.

 

Right-back: Frederic Guilbert (Aston Villa) - 8.11 rating

 

Matty Cash's arrival over the summer has left Frederic Guilbert's future at Aston Villa in doubt but the speedstar offered a reminder of his capabilities in their impressive 3-0 win away to Bristol City on Thursday evening. Guilbert was the WhoScored Man of the Match, completing 94.2% of his attempted passes as well as setting up two goalscoring opportunities. Moreover, Guilbert completed two dribbles and made three clearances.

 

Centre-back: Eric Bailly (Manchester United) - 8.09 rating

 

Eric Bailly will hope to have put pressure on Victor Lindelof's spot in the side after a commanding display in Manchester United's 3-0 win away to Luton. The scoreline flatters United a little as it was genuinely tough at times, though Bailly handled everything that came his way. Bailly made four tackles and interceptions combined and three clearances, including an important block on the line late on when United were only 1-0 up.

 

Centre-back: Jamal Lascelles (Newcastle) - 8.70 rating

 

After a comprehensive defeat at home by Brighton at the weekend, Newcastle came through as the big winners in the midweek cup matches with a stunning 7-0 win away to Morecambe. Jamal Lascelles didn't have much defending to do and took advantage of the opportunity to flourish in the opposition box, with a goal and an assist to his name as well as creating another two goalscoring chances. The Newcastle skipper won three aerial duels in total to finish as the best rated defender in the third round.

 

Left-back: Bernardo (Brighton) - 8.56 rating

 

Brighton followed up their win over Newcastle at the weekend with a 2-0 win at Preston on Wednesday, with Bernardo the pick of their performers. The sub full-back made the most of his opportunity, providing the assist for Alireza Jahanbakhsh for Brighton's opener. Moreover, Bernardo won seven aerial duels in total and completed as many tackles in a dominant defensive display.

 

Right wing: Andriy Yarmolenko (West Ham) - 10.0 rating

 

It's all doom and gloom at West Ham at the moment but not when they turn their attention to the Carabao Cup. The Hammers racked up a big 5-1 win at home to Hull on Tuesday night, with Andriy Yarmolenko picking up the first WhoScored 10-rated performance of the round. The 30-year-old played a direct hand in four of West Ham's goals, netting twice and providing two assists. Yarmolenko had five attempts and registered three key passes overall and completed three dribbles. The Ukraine international even put a shift in off the ball with four tackles and interceptions combined.

 

Central midfield: Curtis Jones (Liverpool) - 10.0 rating

 

England manager Gareth Southgate would have certainly taken notice of yet another impressive display from Liverpool teenager Curtis Jones. The 19-year-old scored a brace in Liverpool's win over Lincoln and had five attempts in total. Moreover, Jones completed 92.4% of his attempted passes, weighed in with four key passes and completed as many dribbles. Jones also managed four tackles and interceptions combined to garner a perfect WhoScored 10 rating.

Central midfield: Kai Havertz (Chelsea) - 10.0 rating

 

After two fairly underwhelming matches in the Premier League, Chelsea supporter got their first glimpse of what Kai Havertz is capable of in their demolition job of Barnsley. Havertz not only opened his account for Frank Lampard's side but ended up scoring a hat-trick against the Tykes in just 65 minutes. The 21-year-old hit the target with all four of his attempts, registered two key passes and completed four dribbles to garner the third and final perfect WhoScored 10 rating of the found.

 

Left wing: Richarlison (Everton) - 8.99 rating

 

Carlo Ancelotti named a surprisingly strong side to face lower league Fleetwood on Wednesday and it paid off, as the Toffees raced to a 5-2 win on enemy soil. Richarlison made the most of facing the League One opposition, helping himself to two goals on the night. The Brazil international scored from both of his shots on target and also registered four key passes. Moreover, Richarlison completed two dribbles and won as many fouls.

 

Striker: Joelinton (Newcastle) - 9.84 rating

 

Joelinton has generally been a huge disappointment since his shock £40m move from Hoffenheim more than 12 months ago but the 24-year-old did turn in one his best displays for the club in midweek. The Brazilian scored twice in Newcastle's victory at Morecambe, netting with both attempts on target, and registered three key passes.

 

Striker: Sebastian Haller (West Ham) - 9.84 rating

 

Sebastian Haller is fighting for his West Ham future at the moment but his chances no harm following his latest display in the Carabao Cup. Haller followed up his brace from the second round with another two-goal salvo in midweek, as West Ham put Hull to the sword. Haller had four attempts in total, won eight aerial duels and completed two dribbles. It won't be long before he gets a look in for West Ham in the Premier League, surely.
