Sterling still pipped to top spot in latest Premier League form rankings

While both of the league’s title chasers won at the weekend it was a hugely significant gameweek in the race for the final two Champions League spots, with just four points now separating four teams.

It is, perhaps unsurprisingly, the top two that dominate the form rankings this time around, but despite his hat-trick at the weekend Raheem Sterling doesn’t quite wrestle top spot from last week’s leader…

10) Sergio Aguero (Manchester City) - 7.46 weighted rating

Down seven places this week, Aguero has now failed to score in back-to-back starts for the first time all year, with his form in general having dipped since a hat-trick against Chelsea a month ago.

9) Salomon Rondon (Newcastle) - 7.47 weighted rating

His signing may have taken a long time to get over the line but Rondon’s arrival at Newcastle has been pivotal to what looks increasingly likely to be another year in the Premier League. The Venezuelan moves up 17 places in the rankings this week after a goal and assist - taking his tallies to eight and five for the season - as the Magpies came from behind to beat Everton.

8) Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace) - 7.49 weighted rating

Dropping from second to eighth this week, Zaha’s scoring streak came to an end as Palace lost to fierce rivals Brighton, with the winger kept relatively quiet on the day, attempting nine dribbles but completing just three.

7) Isaac Hayden (Newcastle) - 7.49 weighted rating

Having fallen to ninth last week following the defeat at West Ham, Hayden has climbed the leaderboard once more, playing a big role in Newcastle’s victory from behind against Everton. The midfielder won five tackles and seven aerial duels to help Rafa Benitez’s side take a huge step towards survival.

6) David Silva (Manchester City) - 7.50 weighted rating

Up ten places this week, Silva pulled the strings as City eventually overcame Watford, completing 95 of 98 passes and creating three chances. The Spaniard also completed three dribbles and registered his sixth assist of the season for Raheem Sterling’s hat-trick goal.

5) Romelu Lukaku (Manchester United) - 7.60 weighted rating

It may seem a strange week for Lukaku to take a place on the leaderboard having missed a number of chances at the Emirates but the Belgium only just qualifies having now started six of United’s last eight league matches. Consecutive match-winning braces against Palace and Saints secure the striker a spot.

4) Eden Hazard (Chelsea) - 7.65 weighted rating

After something of a slump in form in 2019 Hazard is back in business it seems and scored a stunning injury time leveller to earn successive WhoScored.com man of the match awards following his 13th league goal of the season.

3) Sadio Mane (Liverpool) - 7.67 weighted rating

All of a sudden a dark horse in the race for the Golden Boot, Mane’s decisive double against Burnley took his league tally for the campaign to 16 having also struck the woodwork in the win. The Senegal international has now scored eight goals in his last eight league games.

2) Raheem Sterling (Manchester City) - 8.04 weighted rating

Climbing six places but still not claiming top spot this week, Raheem Sterling was the highest rated player in the Premier League over the weekend following a hat-trick against Watford. The England international now has five goals and two assists in his last four league starts.

1) Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) - 8.13 weighted rating

The only non-mover in the top ten, retaining top spot for another week despite Sterling’s best efforts, Van Dijk put in a typically commanding performance once more, winning seven aerial duels, three tackles and even creating two chances against Burnley.

Only ratings taken from each player’s last six league matches are considered, weighted chronologically, with the most recent match carrying greater importance and so on. To qualify each player must have featured in their side’s last league game and started at least six of the last eight available.
