Newcastle, Chelsea and Arsenal all represented in Premier League September best XI
Newcastle are the dominant side in the September Premier League team of the month with three Magpies players making the cut, while Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester City, Everton, Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Arsenal are also represented.
Robert Sanchez (Chelsea) - 7.38
Robert Sanchez features between the sticks in the September team of the month. While the Spaniard made a nervy start to life at Chelsea, Sanchez looked far more composed for the Blues last month, making 12 saves across his three outings. He may have conceded twice - no team conceded fewer in September - but there have been marked improvements in the 25-year-old's game and he did enough in September to feature with a WhoScored rating of 7.38.
Kieran Trippier (Newcastle) - 7.89
With the WhoScored rating of 7.89, Kieran Trippier is the Premier League player of the month. Only Dejan Kulusevski (16) made more key passes than the Newcastle right-back (13) in September, while four assists was more than any other player. 10 tackles was also a solid return for Trippier with the 33-year-old the first of three Magpies representatives.
James Tarkowski (Everton) - 7.30
Everton may have won only one of four games in September, but James Tarkowski was again a consistent performer for the Toffees at the heart of the defence. The star performance came in the 3-1 win at Brentford, where he was named the player of the match, while 16 aerial duels won, the most of any defender last month, saw Tarkowski yield a WhoScored rating of 7.30.
Joachim Andersen (Crystal Palace) - 7.20
Parterning Tarkowski at the heart of the defence is Crystal Palace star Joachim Andersen. The Dane made more clearances (27) than any other Premier League player in September, while a player of the match performance against Manchester United on Saturday helped boost his rating. All in all, Andersen deserves his spot in the XI with a WhoScored rating of 7.20.
Andy Robertson (Liverpool) - 7.31
Rounding off the backline is Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson. The Scot ranked third for key passes (12) last month, and while he was unable to register an assist, it clearly wasn't for want of trying. Nine tackles and interceptions was also a modest return for Robertson, who returned a WhoScored rating of 7.31.
Bukayo Saka was directly involved in a goal in every appearance in September, netting twice and providing two assists to contribute towards his inclusion in the XI. Only three players directly contributed to more goals than the Arsenal wideman, who managed nine shots and nine key passes across four outings to nail down the right midfield spot with a WhoScored rating of 7.85.
James Maddison (Tottenham) - 7.73
The first of two Tottenham players in the side, James Maddison has proven an excellent addition to this Spurs side. The England international provided two assists for Spurs last month, both of which came against Arsenal, those coming from a total of 12 key passes. September was another impressive month for Maddison, who returned a WhoScored rating of 7.73.
Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle) - 7.73
Joining Maddison in the middle of the park is Bruno Guimaraes, who also earned a WhoScored rating of 7.73 in September. The Brazilian midfielder was one of only three players, along with Saka and Mohamed Salah, to win multiple player of the match awards last month as he scored his first goal and provided his first assist of the season. Guimaraes also made 10 tackles to help justify his selection.
Anthony Gordon (Newcastle) - 7.64
The third and final Newcastle player in the side completes the midfield. Anthony Gordon's standout display in September actually came from the bench as he shone in the Magpies' resounding 8-0 win at Sheffield United, a game in which the winger scored one and assisted another. Gordon also made 12 tackles in September, a solid return, to feature on the left with a WhoScored rating of 7.64.
Erling Haaland (Manchester City) - 7.73
While Manchester City's 100% start to the season ended at Wolves on Saturday, Erling Haaland did enough to make the team of the month having garnered a WhoScored rating of 7.73 in September. No player directly contributed to more goals than Haaland (6) last month as he netted five and provided one assist. Only Marcus Rashford (19) managed more shots than the Norwegian hitman (16) in September to help secure his place in the XI.
Son Heung-Min (Tottenham) - 7.69
Partnering Haaland on the frontline is Tottenham Son Heung-Min. The Spurs striker bagged his sixth league goal of the campaign in their 2-1 win over Liverpool on Saturday, and it meant the South Korean scored more goals (6) than any other player in September. Son also finished third for total shots (15) to help earn a WhoScored rating of 7.69.
