Player Ratings: Mahrez and Manchester City run riot over hapless United
It's very much advantage Manchester City after their 3-1 victory at Old Trafford ahead of their Carabo Cup semi-final second leg courtesy of a first half masterclass. We run through our statistical player ratings as United saved face after the break to restore some hope of an upset.
MANCHESTER UNITED - 6.35
David de Gea - 5.77: Committed himself too early for City's third goal and his distribution was poor but did make one decent stop after the break.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 6.34: A difficult first half but improved as the game went on, particularly in possession.
Victor Lindelof - 6.42: Nothing short of shambolic in the first half, looking back to his worst but much improved in the second.
Phil Jones - 6.88: One of the hosts stronger performers, particularly after the break when he stepped in to intercept three times and won five aerial duels.
Brandon Williams - 6.69: Lucky not to make contact with Mahrez following a wild sliding tackle but one of United's best players in possession, attacking with conviction. Eventually booked.
Fred - 6.54: A typically hit and miss display from the Brazilian, who is showing greater responsibility in this side but still bypassed far too easily at times, dribbled past on six occasions.
Andreas Pereira - 5.65: An unfortunate own goal but did little to redeem himself.
Jesse Lingard - 5.74: 2020 has started in the same vein as 2019 for Lingard, who was anonymous, booked, and then subbed at the break.
Daniel James - 5.76: Buzzed around but offered very little quality in the final third and was ultimately replaced.
Mason Greenwood - 6.99: Rarely on the ball but when he was he showed good composure and linked up well with Rashford, assisting the hosts' second half strike.
Marcus Rashford - 6.92: A bright start, then barely featured for half an hour before a composed finish to give United a glimmer of hope and became more involved thereafter.
Subs: Nemanja Matic - 6.80, Angel Gomes - 6.24, Anthony Martial - 6.13
MANCHESTER CITY - 6.97
Claudio Bravo - 6.39: Had little to do and what he did was hardly convincing but couldn't have done more to prevent Rashford's goal.
Kyle Walker - 6.51: Excellent in the first half, bombing forwards and providing a real outlet but faded in the second half and was booked.
Fernandinho - 7.24: A typically assured performance from the Brazilian. The best centre-back on the pitch by a distance, and he isn't a centre-back!
Nicolas Otamendi - 6.61: In contrast to his partner, the Argentine was unconvincing yet again at the back but solid in possession, as usual.
Benjamin Mendy - 6.66: Quiet for much of the game as City attacked down the right more often than not but floated one excellent ball to find Mahrez in the second half.
Rodri - 7.08: Near faultless in possesion, completing 97 per cent of his passes and winning three tackles. Booked.
Ilkay Gundogan - 6.95: Another unassuming but steady performance in the midfield allowed those ahead of him to impress.
Riyad Mahrez - 8.86: Another starring performance from the Algerian who took his goal with ease, mustered five shots in total and completed all five of his dribble attempts.
Bernardo Silva - 8.44: Back to his best in the first half, opening the scoring with a stunning strike before setting up City's second with one of three key passes in total.
Kevin De Bruyne - 7.24: Impressive as ever in the first half, pressing high in a 4-2-4 shape, creating three chances and playing a pivotal role in City's third but a rare underhit pass allowed United to net a consolation.
Raheem Sterling - 6.80: A familiar story for Sterling against United, who dithered in the box and squandered opportunities but kept possession well floating across the front line.
Subs: Gabriel Jesus - 5.97, Phil Foden - 5.96
