Quarter-Final Recap

After coming under staunch criticism during the group stages, despite overseeing two wins and a draw, Gareth Southgate masterminded a 2-0 win over Germany and navigated a comfortable 4-0 victory over Ukraine in Rome over the weekend. Harry Kane set the Three Lions on their way to a spot in the semi-final with just four minutes on the clock after latching onto a fine Raheem Sterling pass. Harry Maguire doubled England's advantage shorty after the restart and Kane added his second and the Three Lions' third five minutes into the second half. Jordan Henderson completed the rout in the 63rd-minute as England made light work of Ukraine.

Denmark, like England, got off to a quick start against the Czech Republic as Thomas Delaney headed a Jens Stryger Larsen corner past Tomas Vaclik to put the Danish Dynamite ahead in the fifth minute. Kasper Dolberg doubled Denmark's advntage shortly before half time as he got on the end of a fine Joakim Maehle cross to expertly volley from close range. Czech Republic rallied after the break, halving the deficit through Patrik Schick four minutes into the second half, but while they pressed for an equaliser, Denmark held firm to secure a 2-1 win and set up a semi-final meeting with England.

Team News

England quartet Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips, Harry Maguire and Phil Foden all successfully navigated a disciplinary tight rope against Ukraine, avoiding a second yellow that would have seen them miss Wednesday's semi-final clash with Denmark. Dean Henderson is injured, but wouldn't have beaten Jordan Pickford to the number one spot anyway. Bukayo Saka missed the Ukraine win, yet has returned to full training ahead of the Denmark meeting and is an option on the right flank.

Yussuf Poulsen and Daniel Wass are both available for Denmark having returned to action in the 2-1 win over the Czech Republic. The pair are battling with Kasper Dolberg and Jens Stryger Larsen for a return to the starting XI in attack and at right wing-back, respectively. Andreas Christensen is expected to feature in defence, despite his late withdrawal against the Czech Republic, but could also move into midfield if need be.

Probable XIs

England vs Denmark: Euro 2020 team news and prediction

England (4231) - Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Phillips, Rice; Saka, Mount, Sterling; Kane

Denmark (3421) - Schmeichel; Christensen, Kjaer, Vestergaard; Larsen, Delaney, Hojbjerg, Maehle; Braithwaite, Damsgaard; Dolberg

Key Battle: Harry Maguire vs Simon Kjaer

England weren't poor at the back with Tyrone Mings starting alongside John Stones for meetings with Croatia and Scotland, but the Three Lions have been far more impressive with Harry Maguire in defence, both in terms of limiting opponents and going forward. Teams have been unable to get the better of the Manchester United skipper in the air, with Maguire returning a 100% aerial success rate across his three outings at Euro 2020.

Additionally, only Kieran Trippier (38.9%) has played a greater proportion of his passes forward than Maguire (36.9%) of England outfielders at the competition, and it allows the Three Lions to get on the front foot far quicker than previously. A series of standout displays at the heart of the defence means Maguire has a better WhoScored rating (7.62) than any other centre-back at the tournament.

Simon Kjaer's WhoScored rating of 6.78 doesn't quite tell the full story of his Euro 2020 campaign. The 32-year-old has been a rock in the middle of Denmark's three-man defence and the composure of the Danish Dynamite skipper has resonated throughout the side.

A proactive approach to defending has been a key reason for their progression to the Euro 2020 semi-final with an avergae of 3.5 clearances per 90 more than any other Denmark player. England will be confident of going all the way this summer, especially as the semi-final and final take place at Wembley, so Kjaer has his work cut out to keep the England offensive at bay this week.

Score Prediction: England 1-1 Denmark
