While the Premier League season is drawing to a close, and in turn fantasy football also comes to an end for another year, these final rounds of matches are crucial. Picking the right team could bring success on the highest imaginary level or despair and ridicule from colleagues and so-called ‘friends’ alike.
Therefore, we at WhoScored have decided to help you out and give you an advisory shove in the right direction based upon our match forecasts for this coming weekend. We calculate a team's strengths and weaknesses in numerous facets of the game, and when one team's strength and another team's weakness collide, generate a prediction of what may play out during the game.
Here we will give an analysis on a player from each position (defence, midfield, attack) that should be geared to go down in fantasy folk-law, for this weekend at least! We will also name our suggested XI for this gameweek and explain just why we have made the picks that we have.
Suggested Defender of the Week - Robert Huth
This Sunday sees Stoke travel south to the capital in what will be a crunch game for mark Hughes' QPR. There is no getting around the fact that Stoke are a big side. Literally, they are so big that there is no getting around them at the back sometimes. Pulis' side's 'physical attributes' make them a real handful from set pieces in particular, and a look at QPR's Team Characteristics shows that the hosts are 'Very Weak' at defending from such situations.
Therefore, if you are looking for a defender to grab a goal this week, look no further than Robert Huth. A modest goal tally of 3 from the back may not seem like much but the German has had 23 headed attempts this season - the fifth most in the league and highest figure of any defender by some margin. He should get chances in an intense game at Loftus Road and we're backing him to crush Hoops hearts with a goal.
Suggested Midfielder of the Week - Alex Song
He may not immediately spring to mind as a first rate fantasy midfielder due to his defensive role in the Arsenal side but while Song has only netted once this season, he has laid on a phenomenal 9 assists from deep. In attempting to step up, if not positionally, to fill the vacant boots of Cesc Fabregas, the Cameroonian leads the way in the entire league for through balls per game (0.7) and has completed 4 more in total than the likes of Silva and Modric, who rank joint second.
Such skills could come into play in the only match on Saturday as the Gunners host a Norwich side who have dipped in form of late. Lambert's men are 'Weak' at defending through ball situations according to WhoScored's Team Characteristics, while Arsenal are 'Very Strong' at scoring from them. If one man can exploit such a trend this weekend, it is surely Alex Song.
Suggested Striker of the Week - Nikica Jelavic
While Papiss Cisse steals the goalscoring headlines of Premier League imports this January, Everton's Nikica Jelavic has ultra-efficiently gone about his business in turning Everton from a mid-table side into European quality. The Croat has 8 goals in as many league starts this season and is a threat in the air as well as being renowned for only needing one touch to score - such is the speed at which he gets his shot away, sometimes the opposition keeper doesn't even get to see it.
Of players to have netted at least 5 goals this season, only four rank higher than Jelavic (27%) for chance conversion, with Cisse unsurprisingly one of them. His lethal finish should be enough to down an already relegated Wolves side, whose plentiful weaknesses will make for pleasant reading for Toffees fans, with 'Not giving away scoring chances' and 'Defending wingplay situations' key to Jelavic's potential success come Sunday.
Rundown of the Rest
In goal we have opted for Wojciech Szczesny (easy for us to say) as the Pole has kept 3 clean sheets in his last 5 games and faces a Norwich frontline that have fired consecutive blanks and scored just once in the last three.
In a 3-4-3 we have opted for Hibbert and Gallas to flank Huth, with the former taking some of the creative strain following the injury to Leighton Baines. He is also playing in a strong Everton defence against a Wolves side that has scored just 38 times this season.
Gallas represents good value having been the most consistent starter of Spurs' centre-backs lately, set to face a Villa side who are particularly woeful at defending from corners and scoring without Darren Bent.
Victor Moses will surely play a big part in this gameweek's big game at the bottom and Blackburn's Team Characteristics show that they are both weak when defending fast break and wingplay situations. Bale starts on the opposite flank as he, like Gallas, will be a threat from set pieces and should torment former teammate Hutton at Villa Park.
Partnering Song we have Adel Taarabt, who would certainly relish in having such a character behind him in the real world. We're living in a fantasy world though, and as Stoke are weak at defending long shot situations, he should have a field day.
Up front with Jelavic we've gone for Rooney and Crouch. The former hardly needs an explanation but will be playing in a United side, at home, who desperately need as many goals as possible to overturn City's lead at the top. Crouch, meanwhile, will prove a threat due to the fact that he is massive, vertically at least, against a QPR side that we already know are poor at defending from set pieces.
So we've given you the tips, now make your move. You don't have much time!
