England squad announcement: When is it and who should make the cut?

The 2019/20 Europa and Champions League campaigns may have only just finished but there's only a week to wait until UEFA action returns in the form of the Nations League.

England have a double header with Iceland and Denmark to prepare for, and Gareth Southgate will announce a squad believed to be no more than 25-players strong this afternoon (2pm GMT - Tuesday 25th).

There are a number of selection dilemmas for the Three Lions boss, who is thought to be likely to call up players from both Manchester City and Manchester United, despite the pair only recently finishing their European campaigns.

One player whose involvement is up in the air is Harry Maguire after he was arrested for his part in a fight whilst on holiday in Greece. Meanwhile, Southgate is sure to be without the likes of Ben Chilwell, Luke Shaw, James Maddison, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and - in all likelihood - Jordan Henderson through injury.

With the Euros having been pushed back until next year, there is plenty of time for those on the fringes to impress Southgate, but based on last season's league performances, who would or at least should make the cut?

Selecting a 25-man squad based on WhoScored.com ratings, there are certainly some high profile omissions, when choosing three goalkeepers, eight defenders, ten midfielders and wingers combined and four strikers.

The first is that of long standing first choice keeper Jordan Pickford, who misses out to a trio of Nick Pope, Dean Henderson and Southampton's Alex McCarthy.

There's no room for Kyle Walker at right-back, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Kieran Trippier all securing higher ratings last season, while options on the opposite side are limited. Ben Chilwell - currently injured - is the only left-back to make the cut, with veteran Ashley Young his closest rival after an impactful first season at Inter.

Perhaps the biggest absentee, or at least the most surprising, is that of Joe Gomez, while Tyrone Mings, John Stones and Michael Keane also miss out on the quartet of centre-backs based on last season's ratings.

Burnley's James Tarkowski is the pick of the bunch ahead of Maguire, while Sheffield United duo Chris Basham and Jack O'Connell complete the four-name list after a superb defensive campaign from the Blades.

In midfield there's a well earned spot for Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse along with the likes of Henderson and Rice. Meanwhile, Jack Grealish is worthy of a first call up in a trio of attacking midfielders ahead of Ross Barkley, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mason Mount, with the latter just making the grade here.

On the flanks, Burnley youngster Dwight McNeil has gone somewhat under the radar and makes up four wingers along with a rejuvenated Nathan Redmond and usual suspects Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling.

Finally, joining Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane in attack, Michail Antonio's excellent end to the Premier League campaign sees him involved here, while Danny Ings was in fantastic form all season and is surely in the reckoning for a recall.
