Liverpool and Netherlands star Cody Gakpo leads Euro 2024's xG overperformers

After taking a look at Euro 2024’s biggest xG underperformers on Monday, it’s only right that we take a look at which players overperformed in front of goal in Germany.

Included in the top 10 are players from Austria, Germany, Slovenia, England, Romania, Spain, Slovakia and the Netherlands.

10. Romano Schmid (Austria) - 0.92 xG overperformance

Austria attacker Romano Schmid scored with his only shot on goal at Euro 2024, an attempt which had an 8% chance of finding the net, according to Expected Goals.

9. Emre Can (Germany) - 0.93 xG overperformance

Like Schmid, Germany midfielder Emre Can managed to find the net with his only attempt on goal at the tournament. Can’s strike had an xG value of just 0.07.

8. Erik Janza (Slovenia) - 0.94 xG overperformance

Slovenia left-back Erik Janza is in at eighth, having found the net with a shot worth just 0.01 xG against Denmark. Janza fired off two further attempts on goal, bringing his overperformance down to 0.94.

7. Jude Bellingham (England) - 1.05 xG overperformance

England’s Jude Bellingham overperformed his Expected Goals by just over one goal, and everybody will know precisely why. The 21-year-old’s remarkable overhead kick against Slovakia will go some way to explaining that, while he also headed home England’s first goal of the tournament in the win over Serbia.

6. Razvan Marin (Romania) - 1.05 xG overperformance

Romanian midfielder Razvan Marin found the net against both Ukraine and Slovakia in Group E. The 28-year-old fired off six shots in total, over performing his xG by just over one goal.

5. Dani Olmo (Spain) - 1.28 xG overperformance

One of the stars for Spain on their way to European Championship glory was Dani Olmo, whose three goals at the tournament saw him take home the shared Golden Boot award. Olmo scored three times, when the chances he was offered suggest he should have only scored once.

4. Florian Wirtz (Germany) - 1.33 xG overperformance

The second of three Germany players in our top 10 is Florian Wirtz, who netted twice on home soil at Euro 2024. Wirtz scored in the hosts’ first and last matches, overperforming his xG by 1.33 goals.
