Player Ratings: Uruguay 2-1 Portugal - Ronaldo frustrated as Cavani steals show

WhoScored.com break down the reasoning behind the player ratings as Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal exited stage left and Edinson Cavani stole the spotlight for Uruguay.

URUGUAY - 6.89

Fernando Muslera - 6.56

Solid display, producing four comfortable saves and not at fault for Portugal’s only goal - the first he has conceded at this World Cup.

Martin Caceres - 6.43

Industrious without actually being forced into a great deal of defensive action, producing one tackle. An impressive display out of possession but awful in it, completing just 11 of 25 passes (44%).

Jose Gimenez - 7.02

An assured a relatively comfortable performance, without seeing much of the ball but producing nine clearances to keep Portugal at bay.

Diego Godin - 7.16

Faultless, as is often the case with Godin. Dealt with Portugal’s modest threat with ease, completing two tackles, two interceptions and seven clearances.

Diego Laxalt - 7.39

The standout performer in defence, while Laxalt was wasteful with the ball at times he was tireless in winning it back, making five tackles and three interceptions.

Lucas Torreira - 7.12

Another strong performance, Torreira was like a pitbull at times and threw his body on the line to block four shots, winning three aerial duels despite standing at 5’6”!

Nahitan Nandez - 6.52

Combative and willing in 50-50s, Nandez worked hard but lost possession often in a mixed display.

Matias Vecino - 6.54

A favourite of Tabarez, Vecino was steady at best again but his discipline was crucial to Uruguay’s victory.

Rodrigo Bentancur - 7.06

Given a more advanced role, Bentancur showed his quality at times, with a sublime piece of skill in the first half and well-timed assist for Cavani in the second but was otherwise quiet before being withdrawn.

Luis Suarez - 7.44

A typical Luis Suarez display, just without the goal. His superb assist for Cavani’s opener was as good as, however, and his ability to disrupt play by hook or by crook helped Uruguay over the line.

Edinson Cavani - 8.84 (Man of the Match)

His ‘headed’ opener looked a great finish before replays showed it smacked the striker in the face but the match winner was a fine curling effort and Cavani’s industry from the front was infectious, winning three tackles.

Subs: Cristian Rodriguez (6.30), Christian Stuani (5.95), Carlos Sanchez (6.10)

PORTUGAL - 6.70

Rui Patricio - 5.96

The new Wolves signing produced one strong save from a Suarez free-kick but that was all, and his positioning was off for the winning goal, even if it was a good finish from Cavani.

Ricardo Pereira - 6.04

Didn’t have the space to do what he does best and bomb forwards, with his threat nullified by the impressive Laxalt.

Pepe - 6.88

From hero to villain in a matter of seven minutes, Pepe brought Portugal back into the game before a mistimed header at the opposite end led to Uruguay’s winner.

Jose Fonte - 7.29

Tasked with shackling Suarez for much of the game, Fonte did so pretty well and was dominant in the air, winning seven aerial duels and completing six clearances.

Raphael Guerreiro - 8.15

Unlike Pereira, Guerrero had some joy down the left going forwards, and his delivery from set pieces was good, with an assist one of a match high of 103 touches.

Bernardo Silva - 7.18

Silva’s best display of the tournament by far, he didn’t have a high bar to beat but looked the most creative player on the pitch, creating four chances and completing four dribbles.

Adrien Silva - 6.09

Again difficult to see what Silva offers at either end, he had one shot, made one tackle and one interception before being subbed off.

William Carvalho - 6.95

Showed a strong range of passing, completing 15 of 16 long ball attempts and 92.8% of his passes in general in a decent all round display.

Joao Mario - 7.05

A typically busy performance, creating three chances and three accurate crosses, but lacked ingenuity at times.

Cristiano Ronaldo - 6.66

A thoroughly frustrated display from Portugal’s main man saw him restricted to pot shots from early on, attempting six in total and hitting the target just once. Booked late on having been kept under wraps.

Goncalo Guedes - 6.20

A performance that summed up the youngster’s tournament. Wasteful in the box and dispossessed too easily, he struggled to live up to his billing.

Subs: Ricardo Quaresma (6.43 - underused), Andre Silva (5.99), Manuel Fernandes (6.40)
