Mahrez leads Man City trio in Premier League team of the week

 

Manchester City maintained their unstoppable push for the Premier League title with a 4-1 win over Wolves on Tuesday night. With Manchester United and Leicester both dropping points, City are now 14 points clear at the top of the table and they dominate the Premier League team of the midweek action. 

 

Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester) - 7.95 

 

Leicester have two players in the team of the week after their 1-1 draw at Burnley. Kasper Schmeichel occupies the spot between the sticks after his fine rearguard showing at Turf Moor as he made six saves to ensure a positive result for his side and a spot in the XI with a WhoScored rating of 7.95. 

 

Joel Ward (Crystal Palace) - 7.44 

 

Crystal Palace's 0-0 draw with Manchester United hardly set the world alight in what was one of more tiresome games in the Premier League this season. Joel Ward is the only player from that stalemate to feature in the team of the midweek action as he returned a WhoScored rating of 7.44. The right-back was on hand to make seven clearances, three interceptions and one tackle to feature. 

 

Caglar Soyuncu (Leicester) - 7.61 

 

Centre-back Caglar Soyuncu is the second Leicester player in the side after his performance in the 1-1 draw at Burnley. The Turkish defender won 10 of the 13 aerial duels he contested at Turf Moor and maximised his proactive approach to defending as he made 12 clearances, that one of the better records in a Premier League match this season, to make the team with a WhoScored rating of 7.61. 

 

Ethan Ampadu (Sheffield United) - 7.53 

 

Sheffield United gave their slim survival hopes a boost with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa on Wednesday evening with Ethan Ampadu putting in a solid shift in defence. The youngster made seven clearances in a clean-sheet attaining display, while additional returns of two tackles and two interceptions contributed towards his inclusion with a WhoScored rating of 7.53. 

 

Lucas Digne (Everton) - 7.72 

 

Rounding off the backline is Everton left-back Lucas Digne. The Frenchman dealt with any danger down his side of the pitch was ease as he won five aerial duels, made four clearances, four tackles and one interception. Digne was unfortunate not to add to his six assists in the Premier League this season as he made two key passes and, with a WhoScored rating of 7.72, is the first of two Everton players to make the midweek best XI. 

 

Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City) - 9.25 

 

With a WhoScored rating of 9.25, Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez is our best rated player from the midweek action. City maintained their unstoppable push for the Premier League title with a 4-1 win over Wolves, with Mahrez netting his seventh league goal of the campaign in the victory. The Algerian's goal came from three shots, while additional returns of five successful dribbles and three key passes contributed towards the 30-year-old's individual award this week.

Jorginho (Chelsea) - 7.65  

 

Liverpool fell to a fifth successive home league defeat for the first time in their history as Chelsea returned to London from Anfield with all three points. Jorginho, a key man since Thomas Tuchel took over the Chelsea reins, is the first of two Blues players after his man of the match display on Merseyside. The midfielder controlled proceedings in the middle of the park as he made five tackles and three interceptions to land a WhoScored rating of 7.65. 

 

Mason Mount (Chelsea) - 7.61 

 

Chelsea's match winner at Anfield partners Jorginho in the middle of the park. Mason Mount has been a revelation for the Blues in 2020/21 as he bagged his fifth league goal of the campaign in the 1-0 win over Liverpool. The England international's goal came from one of three shots and he was unlucky not to add an assist having made three key passes as Mount returned a WhoScored rating of 7.61. 

 

Raheem Sterling (Manchester City) - 7.44 

 

The second Manchester City player in the team completes the midfield. Raheem Sterling put in a solid shift against Wolves and while he didn't contribute to a goal, it wasn't for want of trying as the forward managed five shots and one key pass. One tackle and one interception saw Sterling come away from Tuesday's victory of 7.44. 

 

Gabriel Jesus (Manchester City) - 8.80 

 

The third and final Manchester City player in the Premier League team of the midweek games is striker Gabriel Jesus. A brace against Wolves saw Jesus bag his fifth and sixth league goals of the campaign as he struck with two of five shots against Nuno Espirto Santo's side. In addition, the Brazilian managed two key passes and one dribble to yield a WhoScored rating of 8.80. 

 

Richarlison (Everton) - 7.80 

 

It's an all-Brazilian frontline this week as Richarlison partners Gabriel Jesus in attack. Richarlison scored for the fourth league game running in Everton's 1-0 win over West Brom to lift the Toffees up to fifth. The 23-year-old's goal came from one of five shots against the Baggies and he defended well, too, as he made three clearances to complete the XI with a WhoScored rating of 7.80.
