Who is the best FPL captain for gameweek 7? We asked the question to 4-time top 1k finisher Abdul Rehman, who uses stats, fixtures and the eye test to find the best man for the Fantasy Premier League armband and differential captain for the upcoming gameweek.
Best Captain for Gameweek 7
Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) – Chelsea
Fixture: Southampton (H)
Romelu Lukaku has three goals in his first five league appearances for Chelsea. He has blanked in the last two though against Spurs (a) and Manchester City (H). These weren’t the easiest of fixtures but his stats will be comforting to owners.
Since his first game in Gameweek 2, he has registered 14 shots in the box (4th), six shots on target (4th) with an xG of 2.17.
The Belgian has also created nine chances, two big chances and an xA of 1.65. It’s also important to note that he has played in some tough games in this run - Arsenal (a), Liverpool (a), Spurs (a) and Manchester City (H).
Chelsea play Southampton at home in gameweek 7, which looks to be a very enticing fixture for the Blues. The Saints have conceded 48 shots in the box (14th), 12 big chances (15th) and have an xGC of 8.3 (13th).
Despite Chelsea’s tough opening schedule, they have still scored 12 goals, ranking third in the league. This has been coupled with 51 shots in the box (6th), 12 big chances (3rd) and an xG of 9.0 (7th).
They now embark on a very favourable run of fixtures starting with Ralph Hassenhutl’s men.
Lukaku will be Chelsea’s talisman this season. His stats over the last few seasons show he is an elite option with both a goal and assist threat and for me that places him as the best captain option this week.
On top of that, prior to leaving the Premier League for Serie A in 2019, Lukaku scored seven times in his last seven appearances against Southampton, making Saints one of his favourite sides to face.
The bookmakers rank Lukaku as second most likely to score anytime this week, at a 55% probability, and also have Thomas Tuchel’s troops as the favourites to score over 2.5 goals this week.
Best Differential Captain for Gameweek 7
Heung-Min Son (£10.0m) – Tottenham
Fixture: Aston Villa (H)
Son has had a good start to the season, scoring three goals in five starts for Spurs. Considering they have only scored four goals, this is pretty impressive and shows he is the one hogging the points at Tottenham right now.
He has had seven shots in the box, including two big chances and an xG of 1.80. He has also created seven chances with an xA of 0.62.
Spurs welcome Aston Villa to the London Stadium in gameweek 7, who have been decent at the back this season. They have only conceded 54 shots in the box (15th), 19 shots on target (3rd) and have an xGC on 7.2 (7th).
The North London club have actually been one of the worst attacking sides in the league so far, attempting the fewest shots, scoring only four goals with an xG of 5.9 (18th).
However, the South Korean has shown over his career to be a lethal finisher and doesn’t need many chances to score. He always scores more than his xG and he seems to be the most likely source of points from Spurs at the moment.
Heung-Min Son is also on corners and some free kicks so has many avenues to points. With 24 assists in his last two seasons, we know he can assist as well as score. He has shown over the years how explosive he can be as an FPL asset, which is why I think he is a great differential option this week.
Furthermore, Son is ranked at a 41% probability to score anytime with the bookies, which is first among midfielders on FPL.
