Route to the last-16

England weren't the most aesthetically pleasing side in the group stages of Euro 2020, doing the bare minimum to progress as Group D winners. Indeed, they opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Croatia and followed that up with a 0-0 draw with Scotland, a result that saw Gareth Southgate criticised. However, they saw out the group stages with a 1-0 victory over Czech Republic to progress with seven points to their name.

Germany's path to the last-16 was a little rockier. They fell to a 1-0 loss to France, but responded well with a 4-2 win over Portugal leaving their fate in their own hands. Jogi Loew's side had to twice come from behind to draw 2-2 with Hungary to finish Group F second and set up a meeting with England.

Team News

Dean Henderson, who wasn't expected to feature, is ruled out of England's meeting with Germany at Wembley tonight. Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount come out of 10 days of quarantine today and their return is a boost for Gareth Southgate. Neither player is expected to start, with Southgate likely to go for a defensive setup against Germany. Bukayo Saka is reportedly in line to feature at the expense of Phil Foden on the frontline.

Thomas Muller was initially ruled out of Germany's 2-2 draw with Hungary, but made a surprise appearance off the bench in the stalemate and is tipped to return to the starting XI at Wembley. Jonas Hofmann and Lukas Klostermann will be assessed, though neither would have been expected to start. Leon Goretzka scored the goal that sent Germany to the last-16, and he could come into the side for Ilkay Gundogan, who is a huge doubt for Die Mannschaft. Antonio Rudiger and Robin Gosens are expected to recover from a mild cold to start.

When Manchester City acquired Ruben Dias, John Stones' playing time with the champions was expected to drop further. However, Stones became an integral member of Pep Guardiola's side and his England recall was justified. Now a key man for the Three Lions, supporters are hoping the centre-back's calmness in possession will resonate throughout the side as England seek a spot in the quarter-finals.

Mats Hummels was recalled by Jogi Loew for Euro 2020 after a spell out of the national team. However, his first competitive appearance back for Germany was a disaster as he scored an own goal in their 1-0 loss to France. That said, the 32-year-old responded well to a sub-par showing and ended the group stages as their best-rated player with a WhoScored rating of 7.21.

Score Prediction: England 1-1 Germany
