When to pick the 'lesser' sides in WhoScored.com World Cup Survivor

The World Cup is nearly here, and so is WhoScored.com Games’ £30,000+ Tournament Survivor game!

In this simple prediction game, all you have to do is pick a team to win each day of the World Cup… BUT you can only pick each team once in the group stages.

You will therefore need to know when to pick the so-called lesser teams. But how will I know when to do that, we hear you ask?

Read on friends, because here are our ‘Underlying Stats’ that reveal three teams who could be a canny choice along the way.

Get your entries in by Monday November 21 at 12.45pm!

The bolters - Serbia

There’s always that one team that peaks just at the right time for a tournament - and that could be Serbia.

This World Cup is going to be more about form than any other, and in Aleksandar Mitrovic, the Eagles have a marksman who is in the top five of the Premier League individual xG standings so far this season.

Serbia also won their Nations League group - a good barometer of how good a team is these days - averaging 2.67 big scoring chances per 90 minutes.

That was perhaps no surprise given Mitrovic has the likes of Juventus’ Filip Kostic and Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic around him!

When to pick suggestion: Round 8 vs Cameroon

The tireless - South Korea

In the Qatar heat, having a team that can run and run will likely be a critical factor.

And South Korea are on those, having averaged 63.6 recoveries in their final third during their qualifying campaign for the World Cup, ranking them as one of the highest for that metric in the tournament.

Son Heung-Min - crucially - is fit, and he is averaging 2.4 key passes per 90 minutes in the Premier League so far this term.

Can Paulo Bento coax something special from his men?

When to pick suggestion: Round 4 vs Uruguay

The all-rounders - Netherlands

OK, OK - some of you may not class the Netherlands as a lesser light.

But for some odds sites to have them down in seventh to win the tournament seems astonishing.

This is a team that conceded just 6.07 expected goals in their six most recent Nations League games, all against teams in the World Cup.

And they also topped the xG stats in their World Cup qualifying campaign, so are just as handy going forward.

With a wily Louis Van Gaal at the helm, at his last tournament and with previous World Cup experience, they look a good option at any stage.

When to pick suggestion: Round 9 vs Qatar
