Champions Italy outnumber England in Euro 2020 team of the tournament

After another penalty shootout success, Italy secured Euro 2020 glory at England's expense, winning the European Championship for the second time in their history. As one might expect, the Azzurri dominate the WhoScored team of the tournament.

For the XI, we look at those to have at least made the quarter-finals of the competition and started at least four games to come into contention for a spot in the side.

Gianluigi Donnarumma (Italy) - 6.96

Gianluigi Donnarumma became the first goalkeeper to win the UEFA player of the tournament award at a European Championships as he played a starring role in Italy's Euro 2020 success. The 22-year-old was a shootout hero for his nation in the semi-final success over Spain and final triumph at Wembley as he occupies the spot between the sticks with a WhoScored rating of 6.96.

Vladimir Coufal (Czech Republic) - 7.31

On the back of an excellent debut Premier League season, Vladimir Coufal put in a number of fine displays for the Czech Republic from right-back at Euro 2020. His two assists at the competition were for Patrik Schick to score, those coming from a total of seven key passes. The 28-year-old returned a 100% dribble success rate, beating an opponent six times in all, and was solid defensively as he made 20 tackles and interceptions combined to yield a WhoScored rating of 7.31.

Leonardo Bonucci (Italy) - 7.07

Italy's hero in victories over Spain and England, Leonardo Bonucci won the WhoScored man of the match award in the Azzurri's shootout wins over the pair to help Roberto Mancini's side to glory. The experienced Juventus man was solid in possession as he found a teammate with 88.1% of his 68.1 passes per game, while his raking long balls help to set Italy on the front foot as only Toni Kroos (8) and Pepe (7.5) made more accurate long balls per game than Bonucci (6.7) of outfielders.

Harry Maguire (England) - 7.62

Joining Bonucci at the heart of the defence is England star Harry Maguire. The Three Lions looked more solid with the Manchester United captain in defence, both with the ball on the ground and in the air. Indeed, Maguire lost only four aerial duels across his five Euro 2020 appearances, returning an aerial success rate of 81.8% in the process. Maguire's average of 74.2 passes per game was also the 16th best at the tournament as he features at the back with a WhoScored rating of 7.62.

Luke Shaw (England) - 7.37

Rounding off the backline is Maguire's club teammate Luke Shaw. The England left-back fired the Three Lions into an early lead at Wembley on Sunday night, that his first goal his country. In total, Shaw had a direct hand in four goals at Euro 2020, a return bettered only by strikers Cristiano Ronaldo (6) and Patrik Schick (5). Only Switzerland's Steven Zuber (4) registered more assists than Shaw (3), who consolidated his spot as England's first choice left-back and a spot in this side with a WhoScored rating of 7.37.

Raheem Sterling (England) - 7.28

The third and final England player in the XI is national hero Raheem Sterling. Of the 11 goals England scored at Euro 2020, Sterling bagged three of them, hitting the back of the net in victories over Croatia, Czech Republic and Germany. Sterling played a key role in the Three Lions' semi-final win over Denmark, forcing the own goal for England's first and winning the penalty for the second. In that game, he completed nine dribbles, a record in a match at Euro 2020, to help feature in this side with a WhoScored rating of 7.28.

Marco Verratti (Italy) - 7.59

The penultimate Italian in the side is PSG star Marco Verratti. Verratti missed the first two games of Euro 2020 due to injury, but returned to the starting XI for the 1-0 win over Wales and didn't relinquish his spot in the side after his recall. No Italy player registered more assists than the 28-year-old (2) at the tournament, while no player made more key passes from open play than the midfielder (11). Off the ball he impressed, too, as only teammate Giovanni Di Lorenzo (19) made more tackles than the Azzurri star (18) to make the team with a WhoScored rating of 7.59.

Jorginho (Italy) - 7.28

Unsurprisingly, it's an all-Italian central midfield pairing in the WhoScored best XI as Jorginho joins Verratti in the middle of the park. The Chelsea sensation made at last 11 more tackles and interceptions combined (38) than any other player at Euro 2020, while a total of eight interceptions in Italy's win over Spain is a record in a game at the competition. In addition, a 93.4% pass success rate was the third best of midfielders to make three or more starts and helped Jorginho to a WhoScored rating of 7.28.

Mikkel Damsgaard (Denmark) - 7.28

One of the breakout stars of Euro 2020, Mikkel Damsgaard shouldered the Denmark creative burden with aplomb. The youngster came into the side following Christian Eriksen's collapse against Finland and didn't look out of place on the international stage. The 21-year-old had a direct hand in three of Denmark's 12 goals at Euro 2020, scoring the only direct free-kick at the tournament in the process, as Damsgaard rounds off the midfield with a WhoScored rating of 7.28.

Patrik Schick (Czech Republic) - 7.55

Featuring on the frontline is Czech Republic hitman Patrik Schick. The Bayer Leverkusen striker shouldered the goalscoring burden of his nation excellently, netting five of Czech Republic's six goals at Euro 2020 - no player scored more - including a goal of the tournament contender in their group stage win over Scotland. Schick also returned a dribble success rate of 85.7% and that contributed towards his inclusion in this XI with a WhoScored rating of 7.55.

Romelu Lukaku (Belgium) - 7.39

Joining Schick on the frontline is Belgium hitman Romelu Lukaku. While he was unable to fire the Red Devils to Euro 2020 silverware this summer, only Cristiano Ronaldo and Patrik Schick (both 5) scored more goals than Lukaku (4) at the tournament as he excelled in the final third for Belgium. A 30.8% conversion rate was the fifth best at Euro 2020 of those to score three or more goals and his prolificacy in front of goal saw the 28-year-old yield a WhoScored rating of 7.39, enough to make this XI.
