Now the 2018 World Cup is underway, we are going to highlight five players you should consider for your Football INDEX portfolios 24 hours before their matches. Here are our three tips for Saturday’s group games:

1. DRIES MERTENS (BELGIUM VS TUNISIA)

By all accounts Dries Mertens’ start to the 2018 World Cup was not great. The Napoli striker conceded possession too frequently in the opening exchanges of Belgium’s 3-0 win over Panama but burst into life after breaking the deadlock with an exquisite volley.

Mertens now has two goals in six World Cup appearances and the 31-year-old will be keen to add to his tally when Belgium face Tunisia in their second match of Group G on Saturday.

Tunisia suffered a 2-1 defeat in their opening game of this summer’s tournament, but the scoreline did not reflect England’s dominance. The Three Lions could have scored three of four in the opening 30 minutes, which bodes well for Mertens and his Belgium teammates.

Jesus Gallardo was one of several standout performers for Mexico and the 23-year-old will hope to pick up where he left off on Saturday.

Mexican side Monterrey will be delighted to have signed Gallardo on the eve of the tournament as they could receive a lot of interest if he continues to excel in Russia this summer.

3. ILKAY GUNDOGAN (GERMANY VS SWEDEN)

Germany head coach Joachim Low is expected to make several changes to the side that slipped to a shock 1-0 defeat against Mexico in their group opener.

Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil are both in serious danger of dropping out of the team, with Marco Reus and Ilkay Gundogan set to profit with opportunities against Sweden on Saturday.

Khedira, in particular, struggled against Mexico and looked completely off the pace. Gundogan’s introduction would add energy to Germany’s midfield.
