Bundesliga Team of the Month: Two Chelsea targets make XI following fantastic festive spell

 

Here we run through the best WhoScored rated XI in the Bundesliga for the month of December, featuring two Chelsea targets. Players must have made three appearances to make the team.

 

Goalkeeper: Rune Jarstein (Hertha Berlin) - 8.09 rating

 

Hertha Berlin shot-stopper Rune Jarstein didn't put a foot wrong in December, keeping a clean sheet in all three of his league appearances. The 35-year-old impressively kept Gladbach, Bayer Leverkusen and Augsburg from scoring and no Bundesliga goalkeeper averaged more saves per game (5) than the Hertha No.1.

 

Right-back: Kevin Mbabu (Wolfsburg) - 7.62 rating

 

After a slow start to life this season, Wolfsburg are starting to see the best of Kevin Mbabu following his summer arrival. The Switzerland international garnered a WhoScored rating above 7.00 in all three of his league appearances last month and even netted his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw with Schalke. Mbabu completed 11 tackles and nine dribbles across his three league appearances last month.

 

Centre-back: Dayot Upamecano (RB Leipzig) - 7.70 rating

 

RB Leipzig cemented their place at the top of the Bundesliga last month and Dayot Upamecano played a key role at the back  as the heartbeat of the side, with everything going through the 21-year-old. In fact, Upamecano ranked four in the division for both most passes completed (290) and accurate long balls last month (25).

 

Centre-back: Dedryck Boyata (Hertha Berlin) - 7.59 rating

 

Hertha Berlin relied on Rune Jarstein between the sticks to keep three clean sheets in a row in the December but centre-back Dedryck Boyata was also key in defence. The 29-year-old helped alleviate danger with the most clearances (40) and headed clearances (24) in the division last month.

Left-back: Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) - 7.67 rating

 

Alphonso Davies continues to impress out of position for Bayern Munich and slots in at left-back in our best rated XI. The 19-year-old registered one assist in four league appearances in December and completed 16 dribbles.

 

Right wing: Thorgan Hazard (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.79 rating

 

Thorgan Hazard played a direct hand in three goals in four league appearances in December (2 goals, 1 assist). The former Gladbach star had eight shots in total and registered 10 key passes. Hazard also completed eight dribbles to help Dortmund keep pace with their top four rivals.

 

Central midfield: Marko Grujic (Hertha Berlin) - 7.89 rating

 

Marko Grujic's lowest WhoScored rating in three league appearances was an impressive 7.46. The Liverpool loanee scored and assisted in a WhoScored Man of the Match display against Frankfurt, as Hertha drew 2-2. However, Grujic was most effective shielding Hertha's defence with 14 clearances and 15 aerial duels won.

 

Central midfield: Jonas Hector (FC Koeln) - 7.87 rating

 

Jonas Hector scored or assisted in two of his three league appearances in December (1 goal, 1 assist). The 29-year-old remarkably had six shots in FC Koeln's 4-2 win over Frankfurt, more than his previous seven league appearances combined (5). He also averaged a tackle or an interception every 11.5 minutes of playing time in December.

 

Left wing: Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund) - 8.63 rating

 

Jadon Sancho concluded 2019 in sensational form to fuel talks of a winter transfer to Chelsea. Sancho impressively scored and assisted in three of his four league appearances in December and played a direct hand in more goals than any other player in the division (7). The England international also managed 14 dribbles in that time.

Striker: Timo Werner (RB Leipzig) - 8.13 rating

 

Timo Werner is another Bundesliga star being linked with a move to Chelsea this month. The RB Leipzig striker scored five league goals in December, more than any other players in the division. Robert Lewandowski's goalscoring form has attracted all of the attention but Werner is only one goal behind (18) the Bayern Munich striker for the campaign.

 

Striker: Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund) - 8.87 rating

 

Saving the best until last, Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus is our player of the month for December in the Bundesliga ahead of team-mate Sancho. Reus scored or assisted in all three of his league games last month, playing a direct hand in six goals in the process. In fact, Reus was directly involved in a goal every 39.3 minutes of action in December.
