Ronaldo and Lukaku form stunning attack in Serie A Team of the Season
The 2020/21 Serie A campaign drew to a close on Sunday with Inter as champions for the first time in 11 years and Juventus just about sneaking fourth place. Here we run through our best rated XI for the campaign.
Goalkeeper: Andrea Consigli (Sassuolo) - 6.91 rating
Sassuolo claimed 11 more points in 2020/21 than the season before and conceded seven fewer goals in that time. Andrea Consigli played a key role in their superb campaign, making more saves than any other goalkeeper in the division (34). The 34-year-old also won more WhoScored Man of the Match awards (5) than any other goalkeeper.
Right-back: Giovanni Di Lorenzo (Napoli) - 7.14 rating
Napoli's Giovanni Di Lorenzo edges Juan Cuadrado for the right-back slot on weighted rating. Di Lorenzo managed nine goal involvements from right-back for Napoli this season, his best return in a single campaign. Not just a threat going forward, Di Lorenzo was also strong in the tackle - completing 71.2% of his attempted tackles.
Centre-back: Cristian Romero (Atalanta) - 7.14 rating
Cristian Romero enjoyed a hugely successful final season with Atalanta and finished the 2020/21 campaign as Serie A's best rated central defender. The 23-year-old made more interceptions per game (3.1) than any other player in the division, while also returning 2 tackles per game. Not just crucial at the back, Romero even scored twice and provided as many assists.
Centre-back: Diego Godin (Cagliari) - 7.04 rating
Cagliari only beat relegation by four points and the experience of Diego Godin really helped them over the line. Without Godin in the starting XI, Cagliari didn't win a game. They lost six and drew four of the 10 games he failed to start compared to a win ratio of 32.1% when he did. He also enjoyed his most proactive season since 2015/16, completing 2.1 tackles pg and 2 interceptions pg.
Left-back: Theo Hernandez (AC Milan) - 7.28 rating
Theo Hernandez's debut season for AC Milan was one to remember and he even managed to kick on in 2020/21. The 23-year-old played a direct hand in 12 league goals from left-back this season, up from nine in his first year at the club, and completed more dribbles than any other defender in division (73). Moreover, Hernandez completed 71.6% of his attempted tackles.
Right wing: Domenico Berardi (Sassuolo) - 7.42 rating
After a couple of underwhelming seasons, there is no doubt Domenico Berardi is fulfilling his potential with Sassuolo after solid back-to-back campaigns for the Neroverdi. Berardi equalled his tally for goals and assists last with with 24 in 2020/21 (17 goals, seven assists). The 28-year-old clamed the WhoScored Man of the Match award eight times from his 28 starts, the third most in the division.
Central midfield: Rodrigo de Paul (Udinese) - 7.41 rating
Rodrigo de Paul has surely played his final game for Udinese after a simply stunning season for the Italian side. Udinese finished in the lower half of the table but probably would have been battling relegation had it not been for De Paul, who played a direct hand in 18 goals (nine goal, nine assists) - his best ever return in a single campaign. He claimed the most WhoScored Man of the Match awards in the division (12), while also ranking top for most successful dribbles (122) and second for key passes (82). No player created more clear-cut chances (20) than De Paul and the Udinese star completed the most crosses (excluding corners) with 43.
Central midfield: Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Roma) - 7.30 rating
After failed stints at both Arsenal and Manchester United, it's fair to say it seemed like Henrikh Mkhitaryan's career was winding down. However, the 32-year-old rolled back the years for Roma this season to finish as one of only two players to reach double figures for both goals and assists in Serie A. Mkhitaryan played a direct hand in 23 goals in total (13 goals, 10 assists), only four fewer than he managed in 78 Premier League appearances across spells at United and Arsenal.
Left wing: Lorenzo Insigne (Napoli) - 7.56 rating
Napoli's season ultimately finished on disappointment but Lorenzo Insigne can be delighted with his individual campaign. The 29-year-old enjoyed the second best season of his career, in terms of goals and assists, returning 26 goal involvements (19 goals, seven assists). Seven of Insigne's goals came from outside the box, at least three more than any other player in Serie A. Moreover, only two players attempted more shots per game than Insigne (4.1) in the division.
Striker: Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus) - 7.61 rating
Juventus' season will go down as a huge disappointment but Cristiano Ronaldo will be pleased to have landed the Capocannoniere for the first time. Ronaldo didn't even make it off the bench in Juventus' final game but finished five clear of the chasing pack to land the Golden Boot award (29). Ronaldo, who attempted the most shots per game (5.1) in the division, also provided three assists as part of 32 goal contributions to finish as our Serie A player of the season.
Striker: Romelu Lukaku (Inter) - 7.47 rating
Romelu Lukaku certainly won his inidividual duel with Zlatan Ibrahimovic to rule Milan and the Belgium international played a massive role in Inter landing their first Serie A title since 2010. Lukaku played a direct hand in more goals than any other player in Serie A this season (35), the best return of his career.
