U21 Team of the Week: Debutants Bellingham and Kulusevski star in XI

 

Now that all five of Europe's top leagues are underway, we can finally delve into our first U21 Team of the Week for the 2020/21 campaign.

 

As usual, players must be 21 or under at the start of the season to be eligible for the XI, with each player picked in the position they played in. Here we go...

 

Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Donnarumma (AC Milan) 7.66 rating

 

AC Milan kicked off the Serie A campaign with a routine 2-0 win over Bologna. Milan should have won by more but still required Gianluigi Donnarumma to make four saves for the clean sheet.

 

Right-back: Emerson (Real Betis) -  7.78 rating

 

Real Betis have won their first two games without conceding, with Emerson playing a crucial role at the back for the Spanish side. Betis recorded a 2-0 home win over Real Valladolid at the weekend and Emerson managed seven tackles and interceptions combined and four clearances to help earn his side a clean sheet.

 

Centre-back: Mohamed Simakan (Strasbourg) - 7.76 rating

 

Strasbourg battled to a 1-0 win over Dijon at the weekend, with 20-year-old Mohamed Simakan turning in a WhoScored Man of the Match display at the back. Denied a goal by the woodwork at the other end, Simakan was immense at the back with four tackles and interceptions combined and a 93.1% pass success rate.

 

Centre-back: Maxence Lacroix (Wolfsburg) - 7.75 rating

 

Maxence Lacroix makes the U21 XI following his Bundesliga debut for Wolfsburg. Thrust into the deep end against Bayer Leverkusen, the 20-year-old came through with flying colours. Wolfsburg drew 0-0, with Lacroix making seven tackles and interceptions combined and 10 clearances to help his side keep a clean sheet.

 

Left-back: Adrien Truffert (Rennes) - 8.16 rating

 

Required from the bench as an injury replacement for Faitout Maouassa just before half-time, 18-year-old full-back Adrien Truffert had a debut beyond his wildest dreams. With Rennes trailing 1-0 to Monaco when he was introduced, Truffert set up the equaliser and then scored the winner in stoppage time.

 

Right wing: Phil Foden (Manchester City) - 8.20 rating

 

Phil Foden put a nightmare summer behind him with an accomplished performance in Manchester City's 3-1 win away to Wolves on Monday night. Foden slotted home a Raheem Sterling cut-back for City's second on the night and also weighed in with three tackles and four successful dribbles.

 

Central midfield: Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.23 rating

 

Handed his full Bundesliga debut in Borussia Dortmund's first game of the season, Jude Bellingham certainly vindicated his selection with an assist in their 3-0 win at home to Gladbach. The 17-year-old is making the headlines for all the right reasons in Germany and will be pleased with his decision to join Dortmund ahead of Manchester United.

Central midfield: Matheus Cunha (Hertha Berlin) - 9.29 rating

 

Matheus Cunha has proved a smart signing for Hertha Berlin ever since his arrival from RB Leipzig at the start of the year and his fine start to the season is certainly no surprise. The 21-year-old scored once in a 4-1 win away to Werder Bremen, completed five dribbles and managed seven tackles and interceptions combined.

 

Left wing: Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain) - 8.51 rating

 

After battling with fitness concerns, Kylian Mbappe was finally fit enough to feature for Paris Saint-Germain at the weekend and he made his presence felt with a goal in a 3-0 win away to Nice. Mbappe had six attempts in total and also completed as many dribbles before coming off with just over 10 minutes to go.

 

Striker: Dejan Kulusevski (Juventus) - 8.62 rating

 

Dejan Kulusevski got his Juventus career off on the right foot with a goal and WhoScored Man of the Match display in their 3-0 win over Sampdoria. Played up front with Cristiano Ronaldo, the 20-year-old scored from his only attempt, while registering three key passes and completing as many dribbles. Not only that, but the youngster also weighed in with three tackles and interceptions combined.

 

Striker: Ignatius Ganago (Lens) - 8.79 rating

 

Ignatius Ganago has made a stunning start to life at Lens with a goal in each of his three starts following the weekend's 2-1 win over Bordeaux. Ganago scored once from four attempts, registered three key passes and completed four dribbles. The 21-year-old was also fouled five times in an all-action centre forward display.
