Six of the best: Top rated Premier League signings in gameweek one
There were 42 summer signings making Premier League debuts for their respective clubs on opening weekend, and some notable performers among them.
We run through six of the best to have made their mark in gameweek one.
6. Tanguy Ndombele (Tottenham) - 7.58
While it wasn’t plain-sailing for club record signing Ndombele on his debut for Spurs the Frenchman’s quality showed as the game wore on. Early in the match the 22-year-old was perhaps trying a little too hard to impress but once he relaxed into the match it became increasingly clear that the midfielder would be a huge signing for the club.
The first glimpse of the youngster’s special talent came late in the first half when, in a shooting position, he disguised a delicious chip to the head of Harry Kane, who really should have scored. The former Lyon star grew in confidence thereafter with some lovely touches after the break and his performance culminated in a superb leveller against a Villa side that had led for over an hour.
5. Rodri (Manchester City) - 7.78
Taking no time whatsoever to adapt to Pep Guardiola’s approach, Rodri looked at home at the heart of the Manchester City midfield against West Ham. The Spaniard kept possession effortlessly in the centre of the pitch, completing 90 per cent of his passes, and while he broke up play with two tackles and won all four of his defensive aerial duels, his composure on the ball was most impressive.
The 23-year-old completed all three of his dribble attempts in an excellent all round display.
4. Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa) - 7.88
While Mings was at Villa in the second half of last season, helping to inspire the club’s promotion push, there was a fair amount of ridicule when the club signed the centre-back on a permanent deal. Having seen serious injury hinder his progress at Bournemouth, the promoted club were questioned for forking out over £20m the secure the centre back’s services.
It took just one match for Mings to silence any critics, however, completing 17 clearances in a commanding display at Tottenham - eight more than any other player on the opening weekend - and registering the assist for John McGinn’s strike.
3. Harry Maguire (Manchester) - 7.97
One the subject of dominant defensive displays, Maguire made an instant impression on the Old Trafford faithful with an imperious debut against Chelsea. Another player performing under the pressure of a big transfer fee, the former Leicester centre-back looked completely unfazed.
The England international didn’t put a foot wrong for the Red Devils, winning four aerial duels, making four interceptions and seven clearances.
2. Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Manchester United) - 8.25
Any doubts as to whether Wan-Bissaka could adapt to playing under the heightened expectations that becoming a Manchester United player brings were short lived. The youngster picked up where he left off at Crystal Palace for his new club, making more tackles than any other player against Chelsea, with six.
With a further five clearances, three interceptions and two dribbles the right-back will prove to be an excellent addition, even at £50m, if he can carry on his form from a fantastic debut.
1. Erik Pieters (Burnley) - 8.40
Erik Pieters, playmaker. Well, not quite but even the Dutchman wouldn’t have expected in his wildest dreams to register two assists on his Turf Moor debut. The former Stoke man, after all, had never registered more than two assists in a single Premier League season since his arrival in England six years ago.
The first of said assists, it should be said, was about as fortunate as they come, launching the ball into the gusty Lancashire sky only for it to land at the feet of Ashley Barnes to open the scoring. His second, however, was a fine cross to the same player, and the left-back made seven tackles for good measure at the other end to ensure the Clarets kept a clean sheet against Southampton.
