Standout records, results and scorers in our European weekend round-up

What a weekend of football it’s been across Europe, whetting the appetite for another round of fixtures in the Champions and Europa League in midweek.

Here we run down the highlights from the past few days on the continent, and there have been plenty, starting in the Bundesliga on Friday night.

All was going to plan for Bayern as they hosted Wolfsburg, with a customary goal from Robert Lewandowski to open the scoring before Arjen Robben doubled the champions’ lead ahead of the break. Their visitors hadn’t scored more than once in a single game this season, so it was effectively game over.

Well, not quite. Max Arnold brought the Wolves back into the tie shortly after half-time before an 83rd minute Daniel Didavi equaliser ensured the Bavarians surrendered a two-goal lead in the league for the first time in over three years.

It was a result which opened the door for Dortmund to strengthen their position at the top of the pile and boy did they do that. Ahead of a game with Real Madrid in midweek, Peter Bosz’s men boosted morale further with a huge 6-1 win over Gladbach.

Summer signing Max Philipp had put BVB two up before a 17-minute Aubameyang hat-trick - started and concluded either side of half-time - put the game beyond doubt where Bayern had failed to do so.

Elsewhere the match also saw a remarkable record from Schwarzgelben centre-back Omer Toprak, whose total of 172 accurate passes was the most in a single game in Europe’s top 5 leagues this season.

There was also a big win for Leverkusen on Sunday, inspired by debutant Lucas Alario. The Argentine arrived from River Plate on deadline day and registered a goal and assist as B04 saw off Hamburg with a 3-0 home win.

In the Premier League there were records both extended and broken at The Etihad, where Manchester City romped to a predictable victory at the expense of bottom club Palace. It was a result that meant The Eagles’ record of five defeats without scoring to start a campaign in England’s top-flight stretched to six, while the hosts became the first ever team to score five or more goals in three consecutive Premier League games.

It’s been a less convincing start for La Liga champions Real Madrid, who were able to bounce back from defeat to Betis in midweek but far from flawless once more. Their blushes were spared against point-less and manager-less Alaves by summer signing Dani Ceballos, who scored either side of the hosts' first league goal of the season on what was his first competitive start for Los Blancos, securing a 2-1 win.

While Zidane’s men sit fifth, they are one point and one place below Valencia, whose unbeaten start was extended to six matches with an excellent victory at Real Sociedad. Los Che’s longest streak without defeat over the entirety of last season was just four games by comparison. Having faced both Real and Atletico Madrid already, Simone Zaza’s late winner on Sunday will have boosted confidence further that a genuine renaissance is underway under new boss Marcelino.

In France it was business as usual for freescoring Monaco, who hit Bielsa’s haphazard Lille for four. A brace in that game for Radamel Falcao ensured that the Colombian became the first player in Europe’s top 5 leagues to reach double figures. His tally of 11 after just seven games is quite sensational, while the same could be said of Paulo Dybala’s early season haul, taking his total to ten with a double in the Turin derby.

Elsewhere in Ligue 1, a PSG side missing Neymar through injury failed to break down Montpellier’s stubborn resolve to offer some suggestion that it won’t be plain sailing to regain the title after all. La Paillade became the first team to stop the Parisians from scoring away from home since they also managed the feat last season, back in December. Becoming quite the bogey team, Montpellier have now kept a clean sheet in three of their last four meetings with PSG.

Finally in France, a mention is due for teenage winger Houssem Aouar, who scored on his first Lyon start to earn a WhoScored.com man of the match rating of 8.20 in an otherwise disappointing 3-3 draw with Dijon.

Moving to the Netherlands, champions Feyenoord lost at home to NAC Breda, ensuring back-to-back league defeats for first time since a seven-game losing streak ended in February 2016. There was, however, also a shock at Ajax, who also lost at home to Vitesse as the Eredivisie title race looks capable of opening up.

Those defeats offered PSV Eindhoven to extend their advantage and they did so emphatically, securing a 7-1 win at Utrecht. Jurgen Locadia was on hand to score four goals in the rout, which was a feat last achieved by one Vincent Janssen, up against PEC Zwolle in April of last year.

That name brings us on nicely to a fiery intercontinental derby between Fenerbahce and Besiktas to say the least. The striker, on loan from Tottenham with the former, scored what proved to be the winner in a 2-1 victory over the champions from the spot having opened his account in Turkey the week previous.

It was, however, a total of five dismissals that will most stand out from the latest edition of this fierce rivalry. Luis Neto and Ismail Koybasi received straight reds for the hosts while Ricardo Quaresma, Atiba Hutchinson and Oguzhan Ozyakup all picked up two bookings for the visitors to see the game end with nine against eight!

The Super Lig was also the setting for two memorable hat-tricks, with Adis Jahovic handing newly promoted Goztepe a fourth consecutive victory. It was a treble that served as the perfect response after the Macedonian had handed Sivasspor the lead with an own goal in what was an eventful display.

We end our round-up with a lot of Love. Vagner Love, to be precise, whose second half hat-trick secured an unfathomable turnaround for Alanyaspor. Away to a Trabzonspor side that spent big in the summer, the underdogs were 3-0 down before the Brazilian inspired them to an outstanding 4-3 win.
