2018 World Cup Team of the Tournament: Mbappe the second of three Frenchman
Paris Saint-Germain supporters can rest assured that Kylian Mbappe will still be at the club for at least one more season after squashing reports of a move to Real Madrid in the immediate aftermath of their 4-2 win over Croatia in Sunday’s World Cup final.
Mbappe delivered some truly breathtaking moments of quality this summer and was unfortunate not to even make the final three for the Golden Ball award, which was awarded to losing finalist Luka Modric.
At 19, Mbappe became the youngest goalscorer in a World Cup final since football icon Pele in 1958 and the Brazilian even joked he would have to come back out of retirement if the French teenager continues breaking his records.
Mbappe single-handedly tore Argentina to shreds in France’s quarter-final triumph, scoring a brace to help fire les Bleus into the next round, while also grabbing his final goal on Sunday.
No player scored more goals in the knockout stage of the 2018 World Cup than Mbappe (3) and it’s frightening to think what he could achieve in the game considering he is still only a teenager. His pace was breathtaking and it’s no surprise that he ranks second for dribbles completed at the tournament (32).
He finished his first World Cup tournament with four goals and impressively hit the target with 87.5% of his shots, the best ratio of any player that attempted at least four shots.
