1. HECTOR HERRERA (MEXICO VS SWEDEN)

Mexico will bid to secure top spot in Group F on Wednesday afternoon when they play Sweden in Yekaterinburg.

Juan Carlos Osorio’s side are remarkably leading their group after starting their 2018 World Cup campaign with a 100 per cent record, including a win over reigning champions Germany.

Key to Mexico’s early success has been the midfield work carried out by Porto ace Hector Herrera.

The 28-year-old has been immense in the middle of the park for Mexico. In fact, only Ahmed Fathy (13) and Roman Zobnin (12), who have both played one game more, have completed more tackles than Herrera (11).

Herrera has been regularly linked with a move to the Premier League in the past and could finally secure a high profile switch this summer if he can continue to excel in Russia.

2. JULIAN BRANDT (GERMANY VS SOUTH KOREA)

His selection in Germany’s 23-man squad raised eyebrows before the World Cup, particularly as it came at the expense of Leroy Sane, but Julian Brandt has at least shown his worth to Joachim Low’s side in just seven minutes of playing time over two substitute appearances.

Germany could potentially crash out of the group stages of a World Cup for the first time since 1938 and Low will need to make some tough decisions against South Korea on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bayer Leverkusen winger has made things happen in his short spells on the pitch and it’s not difficult to imagine his influence on proceedings if given the chance to play for an extended period.

3. MARIO GAVRANOVIC (SWITZERLAND VS COSTA RICA)

Switzerland head into the final round of group matches in a strong position to qualify for the knockout round of the 2018 World Cup.

They currently occupy second and face bottom side Costa Rica, while group leaders Brazil face Serbia.

Switzerland are not expected to make too many changes to their starting XI but Mario Gavranovic is knocking on the door for a start on Wednesday night.

Haris Seferovic has been a mainstay up front for Switzerland in recent years but he has never excelled on the international stage.

Gavranovic came off the bench against Serbia and played a huge part in Switzerland coming from a goal down to win 2-1. In fact, the 28-year-old provided the assist for Xherdan Shaqiri’s dramatic last-gasp equaliser.

After failing to make the grade in Germany, Gavranovic has established himself as a fine goalscorer for Zurich, Rijeka and now Dinamo Zagreb.

4. FAGNER (BRAZIL VS SERBIA)

Dani Alves’ injury on the eve of the 2018 World Cup has left Brazil without a renowned right back this summer.

Manchester City’s Danilo started Brazil’s opener at right-back before Corinthians defender Fagner was drafted in against Costa Rica.

The latter is expected to retain his place when Brazil conclude their group stage campaign against Serbia, as Danilo is an injury concern.

Fagner has a good chance to consolidate a spot in Tite’s starting XI for the remainder of the tournament with a good showing on Wednesday night.
