You vs WhoScored: Premier League Form Rankings Ahead of Gameweek 36
The culmination of gameweek 35 confirmed what was perhaps the worst kept secret in Premier League football as Chelsea secured the 5th top-flight title in their history. With the Blues awarded their crown, attention now turns to the race for the three remaining Champions League places and the battle to avoid relegation.
Time is fast running out for Burnley and QPR to secure a place in England’s top tier next season, while no fewer than five teams are separated by two points in the bid to avoid taking up the third relegation spot. Sunderland, Leicester and Aston Villa picked up crucial victories last weekend and they will each be out to do similar in the upcoming round of Premier League fixtures.
There were some stand-out performances over the weekend, with some new entrants emerging in WhoScored.com’s form rankings. Here, we reveal the in-form players as the season closes in on its climax.
Running alongside our regular free 'You vs WhoScored' league with MondoGoal every week is a competition that costs just £2 to enter. Any user who wins one of these contests grants themselves an entry into a special end of season game, which has a £30k prize pool. There are only a limited number of entrants permitted in the end of season game, so if you qualify for it by winning one of the weekly games between now and the end of the season, you're in with a great chance of winning a stake in this amazing prize.
Keep an eye out for tomorrow's WhoScored Expert XI ahead of the upcoming round of fixtures, but first we reveal the form rankings, highlighting the players with the highest WhoScored.com ratings over their past 3 appearances, each of whom must have featured in at least 3 of their team’s last 5 games.
Goalkeepers
Boaz Myhill was a new entry in the top 8 in-form goalkeepers last week, but his performance in West Brom’s 1-0 win at Manchester United sees him storm to the top of charts. The Wales international made 9 saves - including 1 penalty stop - to gain a WhoScored rating of 9.29, earning a place in our European team of the week as a result.
Myhill has kept a clean sheet in each of his last 3 league appearances and up against a labourious Newcastle side that has scored just 3 goals in their last 5 games, it’s possible the 32-year-old will add to that this weekend. Steve Harper may also be a solid addition to your team. While the experienced shotstopper shipped 3 against Arsenal on Monday, Hull welcome a Burnley side that hasn’t scored in their last 6 games, so a clean sheet from Harper could win you some precious points.

Defenders
Aleksandar Kolarov comes straight into top spot in the defenders having gained back-to-back WhoScored man of the match awards against Aston Villa and Tottenham. With Manchester City hosting a QPR side that has just 1 goal to their name from their last 3 league games, Kolarov could form a defence that is expected to remain watertight at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The powerhouse Serb will also provide an attacking threat from deep, having registered 3 assists and netted 1 goal in the Premier League this season.
Gareth McAuley is also a potential addition to the defence given West Brom’s impressive defensive performances of late, though if you are looking for a cheap addition, Jason Shackell could help save some pennies. While the Clarets have disappointed of late, Shackell has performed admirably in the defence and will play a key role if Burnley are to secure a much-needed win at Hull on Saturday.

Midfielders
Leicester’s 3-0 win over Newcastle last weekend was made possible by Marc Albrighton. The former Aston Villa trainee registered 2 assists to follow on from his first goal in a Foxes shirt against Chelsea last week and is currently the in-form midfielder in the Premier League. At just £6.6m, Albrighton remains a relatively cheap option and will be providing width when Leicester host Southampton on Saturday.
He just pips Nemanja Matic to the post, with the Serb playing a hugely influential role in wins over Leicester and Crystal Palace. Matic has now gained 6 WhoScored man of the match awards this season, 3 of which have come in his last 5 league outings. Chelsea may have the title sewn up, but José Mourinho will want to maintain his impressive record against Liverpool, so don’t expect the Blues to let up against their rivals. Matic will be crucial for Chelsea if they are to come out on top against Liverpool on Sunday.

Forwards
A brace in Arsenal’s 3-1 win at Hull on Monday night helped Alexis Sánchez gain a WhoScored rating of 9.95 and moved him to the top of the in-form frontmen in the Premier League. The Chilean has 5 goals to his name from his last 5 competitive appearances and looks to have rediscovered his goalscoring touch after a dip in form. The Gunners have scored 37 goals at home in England’s top tier this term - only Manchester United have netted more (40) on their own turf - and you would not bet against the north London outfit adding to this against a Swansea side that has shipped 9 in their last 6 league games, especially with Alexis spearheading the offensive.
Christian Benteke is also in fine form with 2 more goals coming in Aston Villa’s 3-2 home win over Everton. The Villans host a West Ham team currently meandering towards the end of the campaign, with the burly Belgian tipped to be in among the goals when they welcome the Hammers to Villa Park this weekend. However, if you’re looking to save money, Leonardo Ulloa may be an astute pick up for just £7.9m. The Argentine has 3 goals in his last 4 league games, including a brace against Newcastle last Saturday.
