Sterling and Kane earn perfect 10 ratings in Champions League team of the week

We are now at the halfway point in this season's Champions League group stage and some clubs are now on the brink of qualifying for the knockout phase. There were plenty of exciting, high-scoring games in gameweek three and it makes for a highly competitive XI, with the likes of Angel Di Maria, Dries Mertens and Tanguy Ndombele just missing out.

Here we run through the best WhoScored rated XI from the midweek Champions League action, with additional information about their Football INDEX share prices.

Goalkeeper: Fernando Muslera (Galatarasaray) - 8.28 rating

Galatasaray gave Real Madrid a tough night on Tuesday and will be disappointed not to have come away with a point after coming up against a determined Thibaut Courtois. Their own goalkeeper, Fernando Muslera, was also on form. The 33-year-old couldn't keep Toni Kroos' effort out but he did make 11 saves - a record in a Champions League match this season.

Right-back: Serge Aurier (Tottenham) - 8.59 rating

It is unlikely that Serge Aurier has a long-term future at Tottenham but the right-back provided a reminder of what he is capable on a good day in a 5-0 win over FK Crvena Zvezda on Tuesday night. Aurier was actually Tottenham's most creative player in midweek, registering one assist and four key passes. The 26-year-old also completed two dribbles and won two free-kicks. Furthermore, only Son Heung-min completed as many tackles as Aurier (5) in their big win.

Centre-back: Yaroslav Rakitskiy (Zenit) - 8.46 rating

Despite throwing away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to RB Leipzig, Zenit centre-back Yaroslav Rakitskiy was the WhoScored Man of the Match. The 30-year-old put Zenit into the lead with an impressive effort from outside the box midway through the first half. Rakitskiy proved a capable ball-carrier in Germany, completing more dribbles (4) than any other player on the pitch. Rakitskiy also made nine clearances and three tackles and interceptions combined.

Centre-back: Stefan de Vrij (Inter) - 8.18 rating

Inter secured an impressive 2-0 win at home to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday to pick up their first win of the group stage. Stefan de Vrij was a standout performer for the Italian side, recording an assist for the second game running. His vision spotted Lautaro Martinez's run in behind the Dortmund defence to put Inter ahead in the first-half. De Vrij also completed 93.8% of his passes and made six tackles and interceptions combined, as well as five clearances.

Left-back: Renan Lodi (Atletico Madrid) - 8.18 rating

Atletico Madrid typically secured a 1-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in midweek but they only made the breakthrough with 12 minutes of normal time remaining. Renan Lodi's cross was met with an Alvaro Morata header but it was the former who came away with the WhoScored Man of the Match award. Lodi registered two key passes in total and completed three dribbles. The 21-year-old also made three tackles and interceptions combined.

Right wing: Lionel Messi (Barcelona) - 9.79 rating

Lionel Messi has now scored in 15 straight Champions League seasons after opening his account for the campaign in Barcelona's 2-1 win away to Slavia Prague. The Barcelona superstar completed 10 dribbles on Wednesday, doing so for the second Champions League game in a row. Messi had five shots against Slavia Prague and also registered four key passes in another dazzling display from the Argentine.

Central midfield: Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain (Liverpool) - 8.93 rating

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made the most of his start against Genk on Wednesday and will now push Jurgen Klopp for minutes in bigger games. The England international scored Liverpool's opening two goals, one of which was an obscene finish with the outside of his boot from outside the area. The 26-year-old completed two dribbles and impressively completed 88.9% of his passes before being brought off in the 74th-minute.

Central midfield: Toni Kroos (Real Madrid) - 8.87 rating

Toni Kroos' first goal for Real Madrid since August was enough for Zinedine Zidane's side to come away with a 1-0 win away to Galatasaray on Tuesday. The 29-year-old created four goalscoring chances for his team-mate and on another day they likely would have scored more had it not been for an inspired Fernando Muslera in goal for the home side. Kroos also chipped in with seven tackles and interceptions combined to help Madrid keep a clean sheet in Istanbul.

Left wing: Raheem Sterling (Manchester City) - 10.0 rating

Raheem Sterling is one of two players in our best rated XI to garner a perfect WhoScored 10 rating from the midweek Champions League action. The Manchester City forward is seriously developing into one of the best in the world and against Atalanta he scored an 11-minute hat-trick. Sterling set up Sergio Aguero with a fantastic cross for City's equaliser and soon after won a penalty from which the home side took the lead.

Striker: Harry Kane (Tottenham) - 10.0 rating

After a difficult start to the season, Tottenham picked up a timely 5-0 win ahead of Sunday's daunting trip to Anfield to face Premier League leaders Liverpool. Harry Kane took his tally to four goals in three Champions League matches with a brace against FK Crvena Zvezda to pick up the WhoScored Man of the Match award in three of his last four appearances for club and country. Kane had seven shots in total on Tuesday night and also registered three key passes and completed as many dribbles.

Striker: Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain) - 9.59 rating

Kylian Mbappe admitted his frustrations at not starting against Club Bruges in midweek and the Belgian side must certainly be thankful he was limited to just 38 minutes on the pitch. Mbappe still found time to score a hat-trick and register one assist in PSG's 5-0 win. In doing so, Mbappe is the youngest player in Champions League history to reach 15 career goals in the competition. The Ligue 1 giants hadn't looked overly convincing until Mbappe came off the bench and the 20-year-old certainly made his presence felt. If Mbappe isn't completely fit, as Thomas Tuchel insists, it's scary to think what he will be capable of this season when he is at the peak of his powers.
