Croatia hardly set the world alight with their 2-0 win over Nigeria at the weekend, but it was a routine win over their Group D counterparts. After Argentina’s 1-1 draw with Iceland earlier in the day, Croatia hold all in their cards in their quest to secure a spot in the next round of the World Cup.
While they don’t have the star power of Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, the European powerhouse are a well-drilled, well-oiled machine that is more than capable of keeping things ticking over. However, even then, a midfield containing Luka Modric, Mateo Kovacic, Marcelo Brozovic and Ivan Rakitic is the envy of any nation. The talent pool is so deep, that Kovacic isn’t even a guaranteed starter in the XI.

With Jorge Sampoali expected to mix things up against Croatia, tinkering from a 4-2-3-1 used in the 1-1 draw with Iceland to a three-man backline ahead of tonight, Croatia will look to capitalise on any uncertainty in the Argentina camp to consolidate their spot at the top of the group. Of course, Argentina have the means to blow any team away on their day, but the lack of continuity in system and approach means La Albiceleste could backfire spectacularly tonight.
