Manchester United dominate Europa League Team of the Season so far

 

Here we run through the best WhoScored rated XI from the 2019/20 Europa League campaign up until this point, considering only those who have made six appearances in the competition.

 

Goalkeeper: Giedrius Arlauskis (CFR Cluj) - 7.05 rating

 

CFR Cluj were eventually eliminated by Europa League specialists Sevilla in the round of 32 but did admirably to only go out on the away goal rule. Much of that is down to the performance of goalkeeper Giedrius Arlauskis, who made six saves across the two legs. In total, the 32-year-old made 28 saves in the competition, an average of 3.5 per game. The Lithuania international also kept a clean sheet four times in eight matches.

 

Right-back: Silvan Widmer (FC Basel) - 7.44 rating

 

FC Basel made a real statement of intent with a 3-0 victory away to Frankfurt in the first leg of their last-16 tie before the Europa League was postponed. FC Basel have been in great form in the competition all season with seven wins from nine games and right-back Silvan Widmer has been a notable performer for the Swiss side. Widmer has scored twice and provided one assist in eight appearances thus far and is FC Basel's top-rated player in the competition.

 

Centre-back: Harry Maguire (Manchester United) - 7.46 rating

 

Manchester United have impressively only conceded three goals in the Europa League this season, the best defensive record in the competition, and Harry Maguire's leadership skills at the back have been increasingly apparent. The United captain has been dominant in the air, winning 21 of the 23 aerial duels contested and equalling threatening in attack, with 1.2 shots per game.

 

Centre-back: Gernot Trauner (LASK) - 7.33 rating

 

LASK were having a fine Europa League campaign up until meeting Manchester United last time out, albeit the Austrian side were without important players and played their home leg in an empty stadium. Gernot Trauner has been particularly key for LASK and is their top-rated player in the competition. In addition to one goal and one assist, the 27-year-old averages 4.3 tackles and interceptions per game and has won more aerial duels than any other player in the competition (49).

 

Left-back: Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) - 7.78 rating

 

Teenager Bukayo Saka has been a revelation for Arsenal this season and reserved his best performances for the club's Europa League campaign prior to elimination in the round of 32. Saka played a direct hand in seven goals in six appearances despite the fact half of that time was spent at left-back. Furthermore, he picked up the WhoScored Man of the Match award on three occasions in that time. Indeed, Saka has more assists than any other player in the competition (5), marking a hugely impressive maiden European campaign for the 18-year-old.

 

Right wing: Nicolo Zaniolo (Roma) - 7.53 rating

 

Football being postponed for the foreseeable future will work in Nicolo Zaniolo's favour, as the Roma youngster has been sidelined since January with a serious knee injury. Having the 20-year-old available would certainly boost Roma's chances of success in the Europa League this season. Prior to injury, Zaniolo played a direct hand in four goals in six appearances (two goals, two assists). Moreover, only Wolves' Adama Traore (5.3) averages more successful dibbles per game than Zaniolo (4.2) in the competition.

Central midfield: Fred (Manchester United) - 7.56 rating

 

After a difficult start to life at Manchester United, Fred has finally found his feet at the club and has particularly excelled in the club's Europa League campaign this season. The Brazilian has notably played a direct hand in six goals (two goals, four assists) in as many appearances in the competition having failed to score or assist in 25 appearances in the league this term. The 27-year-old also has an impressive pass success rate of 90.4% from his 76.7 attempted passes per game.

 

Central midfield: Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United) - 8.11 rating

 

Bruno Fernandes' rating is a combination of his displays for Sporting and new club Manchester United. Across the two clubs, Fernandes has played a direct hand in 10 goals in the competition this season, at least two more than any other player. Fernandes ranks second for total assists (4) and top for the most WhoScored Man of the Match awards (4). The 25-year-old has also attempted at least six more shots than any other player in the competition this season (35).

 

Left wing: Esteban Granero (Espanyol) -  7.57 rating

 

Esteban Granero left Espanyol to join Marbella FC in January before Espanyol were eliminated from the competition by Wolves in the round of 32. Granero started as many games in the Europa League as he did in LaLiga prior to his departure (5) but certainly made his presence felt in Europe. The former Real Madrid midfielder registered two assists in six Europa League appearances and picked up the WhoScored Man of the Match award on two occasions. Furthermore, only two players average more key passes (3) per game than the 32-year-old in the competition this season.

 

Striker: Umar Sadiq (Partizan Belgrade) - 7.58 rating

 

Partizan Belgrade didn't make it out of their group in the Europa League but it wasn't down to a lack of effort from their striker, Umar Sadiq. The 23-year-old impressively scored four goals in six outings in the competition and also chipped in with one assist. Sadiq, who claimed two of the three WhoScored Man of the Match awards won by Partizan, worked hard without the ball with 1.3 tackles per game. The Nigeria international also made 2.3 dribbles per game and was fouled more times per game (2.5).

 

Striker: Alfredo Morelos (Rangers) - 7.53 rating

 

Rangers have it all to do to recover from their 3-1 first leg defeat at home to Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16 and Steven Gerrard will need star striker Alfredo Morelos to be on top form whenever they get the chance to play the return game in Germany. Morelos is the joint-top scorer in the competition this season with six goals in eight games for the Scottish giants. The 23-year-old also has one assist in that time and has claimed three of the five WhoScored Man of the Match awards won by Rangers players in the competition this season.
