How they qualified?

Having both missed the second round due to European participation, Tottenham entered the competition in the third round where a trip to Leyton Orient was pencilled in. However, that match was cancelled and Spurs handed the win after a COVID-19 outbreak in the Leyton Orient squad, which forced their training ground and stadium to close.

That wasn't the case for Chelsea and Barnsley, though the latter must have felt cancellation was a better option after they fell to a 6-0 loss at Stamford Bridge. A Kai Havertz inspired performance saw the Blues breeze into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup to set up a tantaslising derby with their London rivals.

Team News

The immediate concern for Tottenham is with Son Heung-Min. The South Korean forward was brought off at the break in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Newcastle with a hamstring issue and replaced by Steven Bergwijn. Moussa Sissoko was taken ill 30 minutes before kick off an his availability is in question, while Japhet Tanganga and Gareth Bale are ruled out. Sergio Reguilon was on the bench on Sunday and he is expected to start at left-back in what is expected to be a much-changed Spurs XI. Dele Alli will have viewed this match as a chance to prove his worth to Jose Mourinho, but he has supposedly been left out of the squad.

Chelsea, too, have a debutant prepared to step in with Edouard Mendy expected to make his first start following his arrival from Rennes last week. The Blues have conceded five times in the last two league outings, so Mendy's arrival comes at the ideal time. Billy Gilmour, Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech are remain sidelined, but Ben Chilwell is in line to make his full debut after playing 24 minutes in the win over Barnsley.

Probable XIs

Carabao Cup team news and prediction: Tottenham vs Chelsea

Tottenham (433) - Hart; Aurier, Alderweireld, Dier, Reguilon; Fernandes, Hojbjerg Ndombele,; Lamela, Kane, Bergwijn

Chelsea (4231) - Mendy; Azpilicueta, Tomori, Zouma, Chilwell; Jorginho, Barkley; Hudson-Odoi, Havertz, Mount; Giroud

Key Battle - Sergio Reguilon vs Ben Chilwell

Tottenham beat Manchester United to the signing of Sergio Reguilon, much to the delight of supporters, and while they'd hoped to see the Spaniard in action at the weekend, with the games coming thick and fast, the 23-year-old is in line to be thrown in at the deep end in midweek. Reguilon offers Spurs greater attacking thrust from left-back than new teammate Ben Davies and he'll be looking to make an immediate impact against Spurs' rivals.

Reguilon isn't the only new left-back tipped to make their full debut with Ben Chilwell hoping to earn his first start having come off the bench against Barnsley last week. Like Reguilon, it'll be a baptism of fire for Chilwell, who is now looking to build up his fitness after joining from Leicester with a heel problem as he looks to make the starting left-back spot his own.

Prediction: Tottenham 2-2 Chelsea
