Man Utd's Scott McTominay stars in FA Cup quarter-final best XI
After a thrilling weekend of FA Cup action, here we run through the standout performers from the quarter-finals. Included in the XI are players from Manchester United, Chelsea, Coventry, Manchester City, Wolves and Liverpool.
Andre Onana (Manchester United) - 8.16
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana continued his strong form between the sticks when he made a total of eight saves against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. The Cameroon international also made four high claims to take home a WhoScored rating of 8.16.
Chelsea right-back Malo Gusto has impressed with his performances in the absence of captain Reece James, and did well once again as the Blues narrowly came through against Leicester on Sunday. Gusto made one successful dribble, five tackles and one clearance, before providing the assist for Noni Madueke’s 97th-minute strike to land a WhoScored rating of 7.47.
Bobby Thomas (Coventry) - 7.58
Coventry centre-back Bobby Thomas claims a place in our XI having defended impressively in the Sky Blues’ dramatic 3-2 victory over Wolves on Saturday. The 23-year-old made a total of six aerial wins, three tackles, five clearances and three interceptions to help himself to a WhoScored rating of 7.58.
Manuel Akanji (Manchester City) - 7.52
Swiss defender Manuel Akanji put in a typically-assured performance as Manchester City comfortably saw off Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening. The 28-year-old maintained a pass success rate of 94%, while he also made three tackles and two interceptions to post a WhoScored rating of 7.52.
Rayan Ait-Nouri (Wolves) - 8.53
Wolves wing-back Rayan Ait-Nouri can perhaps count himself unlucky not to have been on the winning side on Saturday after a strong display in the defeat to Coventry. Ait-Nouri was involved in both of Wolves’ goals, which came less than six minutes from the 90-minute mark, scoring an equaliser before turning provider for Hugo Bueno to put the hosts ahead four minutes later. The Algerian also completed three successful dribbles, made three clearances and one interception to return a WhoScored rating of 8.53.
Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) - 8.69
Manchester City star Bernardo Silva might have benefitted from hefty deflections in both of his goals against Newcastle, but without them; the treble winners may not have progressed to a sixth successive FA Cup semi-final. Both of Silva’s two shots on goal found their way into the net, while he also made one key pass, two interceptions and maintained a pass success rate of 96% to earn a WhoScored rating of 8.69.
Scott McTominay (Manchester United) - 8.67
With an 8.67 WhoScored rating, Manchester United’s Scott McTominay was crowned Player of the Match in a seven-goal thriller at Old Trafford on Sunday. The Scotland international put the hosts ahead after just 10 minutes, while he also won three aerial duels, made two tackles, two successful dribbles and provided the assist for Marcus Rashford’s equaliser in the 22nd minute of extra time.
Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool) - 7.98
Despite defeat against Manchester United, Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister earns his place in our Team of the Round having continued his fine form with yet another goal, that a first-half equaliser after 44 minutes. Mac Allister also battled well in midfield as he made three tackles, one clearance and one interception, on his way to a WhoScored rating of 7.98.
No matter the outcome of their semi-final against Manchester United, Haji Wright’s name will live long in the memory for Coventry City fans after his sensational 99th-minute strike sealed their place in the last four. The USA international fired off a total of seven shots at Molineux on Saturday, with three of those finding the target. Coventry striker Ellis Simms was just as pivotal as teammate Haji Wright in sealing the Sky Blues’ place at Wembley as he found the net twice against Wolves, to take his tally in the competition to five.
